I watched Tomb Raider again last night,
for the 5th time probably. It's a very
good movie, for what it is, I don't see
how the new one could be better. AJ
is in her prime and sexy as hell.

, "Didn't I see enough video game stories in 'Tron', 'The Last Starfighter', or 'Ender's Game'?"

I watched some of an annual international team tournament for a video game last year. I was shocked (shocked, I tell you) at the millions in prize money and the hundreds of thousands of people, almost all young men under 30 (PRIME movie audience) who are completely into this.

I think, if Spielberg got the movie right from their viewpoint, it will have legs like few ever have, just because that audience will go multiple times and pick it endlessly on social media.

The wonder is that there haven't been more of them. Must be incredibly expensive CGI to do it right.

Also, if the development costs included programming a fully functional new world called Oasis, and people can see the movie and go online and play for themselves, the revenue stream could dwarf the movie receipts. Could even be free tonplay, but make in-game purchases for better weapons and power, and it will be a multi-billion revenue stream for years.

I'm guessing Amblin is smart enough to have set it up just that way.
Never doubt a small group of concerned citizens can change the world; it's the only thing ever has

The end result is amazing to watch. The gaming nerds in the preview screening I attended were so giddy, they jabbered all the way through the end credits.

Oh, I see it's not out yet. Anyway the preview on my HD looks pretty high tech.

Virtual reality in the future is one
of those things that everybody
thinks will be hot, and will fizzle
out. Like we all thought in the
50's and 60's that in just 30 years
we'd all be flying to work Jetsons
style. We have that tech now, but
it's impractical as hell.

The only way virtual reality will ever
be a huge hit is if it's coupled with
legal reality altering drugs. Without
those, it gets boring as hell in a very
short time. And drugs like that will
never be legal.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Ready Player One is not really a Video Game Adaption, but an adaption of a book about Video Game players. So it's more like a PG-13 Matrix movie,

Actual movies based on video games have had a pretty poor showing at breaking even. Despite fairly large budgets, the original Laura Croft movie is a rare success. The sequel two years later pretty much bombed.

Lara Croft| Tomb Raider Release Date: June 15, 2001 Production Budget: $115 million Worldwide: $274,703,340
Lara Croft|The Cradle of Life Release Date: July 25, 2003 Production Budget: $95 million Worldwide: $156,505,388
Prince of Persia |Release Date: May 28, 2010 Production Budget: $200 million Worldwide: $336,365,676
Tron Legacy| Release Date: December 17, 2010 Production Budget: $170 million Worldwide: $400,062,763
Ender's Game |Release Date: November 1, 2013 Production Budget: $110 million Worldwide: $125,537,191
Warcraft | Release Date: June 10, 2016 Production Budget: $160 million Worldwide: $433,677,183
Assassin's Creed |Release Date: December 21, 2016 Production Budget: $125 million Worldwide: $240,697,856
Tomb Raider| Release Date: March 16, 2018 Production Budget: $94 million Worldwide: $135,025,054 (6 days )

The most successful series lasted 15 years so far, and despite the title of the last one, "The Final Chapter" it was the highest revenue of all 6, which means Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich will make another one

Rank Title Studio Worldwide Domestic / % Overseas / % Year
1 Resident Evil: The Final Chapter SGem $312.2 $26.8 8.6% $285.4 91.4% 2017
3 Resident Evil: Retribution SGem $240.0 $42.3 17.6% $197.7 82.4% 2012
2 Resident Evil: Afterlife SGem $300.2 $60.1 20% $240.1 80% 2010
4 Resident Evil: Extinction SGem $148.4 $50.6 34.1% $97.8 65.9% 2007
5 Resident Evil: Apocalypse SGem $129.3 $51.2 39.6% $78.1 60.4% 2004
6 Resident Evil SGem $103.0 $40.1 39% $62.9 61% 2002

These were all mid level Production Budgets: $33-$65 million so the demands for success are not nearly as high as for the above films with $94-$200 million production budgets.

In “Ready Player One”, the virtual space “Oasis”, contains different “planets” that house different content. For example, there is a casino planet, a “Minecraft” world, etc. I thought the winner would get control of the internet, but it would be more akin to owning Amazon web services. Fans of “World of Warcraft” will appreciate the use of objects and weapons from that world, but Spielberg throws in plenty of pop references from the 70’s and 80’s.

There have been plenty of animated films based on video games: Pokemon, Angry Birds... and what about “Wreck It Ralph”? I think most were modestly profitable. The live action adaptations are usually losers because the audience is really invested in the game characters, but it is difficult to translate it live.

Thanks for the review Aye...

You’re welcome! I enjoy reading everyone’s take on films past and present. I wonder if this is what Hot Blonde had in mind when she started this thread?

See, I don't think “Wreck It Ralph” is a movie based on a video game, it is a Disney movie set in the world of video games. Pokemon ($30m) and Angry Birds ($73m) were fairly modest budget films that did OK as far as animated films.
