I saw "The Greatest Showman" last night and it was great! Unfortunately it seems to have very little in the way of historical accuracy, but a great musical none the less.
. I enjoyed it as well. It has been mentioned to me that the movie is similar to the animated feature “Sing”, but I thought “Greatest Showman” was way better.

Father G, I’m curious if you saw the recently released film “Paul the Apostle”? If so, what did you think?

I vaguely remember “They Came To Rob Las Vegas “. I’ll have to track it down again. I’ve never seen “Candy”, but I don’t think I missed anything. Most modern gross sex comedies are just crude situations hoping for a laugh. “Dirty Grandpa”, “Borat”, anything with Amy Schumer (her “I Feel Pretty” opens April 20).

There were
49 films released with an R rating in the last two months of 1968
77 films released with an R rating in 1969
160 films released with an R rating in 1970
182 films released with an R rating in 1971
...
310 films released with an R rating in 2017

I just assume there were a bunch of movies waiting to be released in 1968 but they needed the new rating system. It doesn't look like very many of the 49 were about sex, as there was probably a greater demand for action thrillers and horror.

Although I haven't seen it, I don't think that the Thomas Crown Affair had sex or violence, but the idea of not being punished for a crime was against the Hay's Code.

Other than Candy and "The Chastity Belt" it doesn't look like the original 49 films were primarily sex . I would have to look every single one up as really only "Rosemary's Baby" was a famous film.

Prudence and the Pill was about avoiding contraception

The Secret Life Of An American Wife, seems like it had a sex theme, but it doesn't look like a T&A film

The Sweet Body of Deborah features an undraped woman, but it seems to be more of a thriller

I think it is quite possible the movie industry did not want to overtax the new film ratings system and get the Catholic Church all spun up immediately.

Only three films got an X rating that first year (1968). You can probably find all of them on Youtube today as I doubt they would be rated more than PG-13.

The Secret Life Of An American Wife above, the
likeness of Walter Matthau is ridiculous. He
was almost 50 when it was made, they have
him looking 23. He never looked like that in
his life.

This is him in the movie, nothing like the image
above.

I remember seeing that on network TV back in mid-70s. All I remember was they stole an RV or a armored truck, and buried in the desert so they could work on breaking in at their leisure. That's all I remember, and it never comes on in reruns.

The two movies that I remember from that initial crops of 49 R rates films were Rosemary's Baby and Thomas Crown Affair. It seems as if the TCA was later reduced to a PG movie, as the initial shock of having criminals not being arrested wore off.

But it seems as if the most critical success of the group was actually "Rachel Rachel" where Paul Newman directed his wife. The story included a girl on girl kissing scene, which would have scored it an R rating in 1968.

================================

I am not sure what the history of X-rated films was. When Midnight Cowboy was released in 1971 it was X-rated, but it was later changed to an R Rating. Obviously porn films were not even submitted to the MPAA for a rating

The famous names in X-rated films don't even show up until 1973.

The Tourist. Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie. It
was a BO flop, got 25% on Rotten T.

I really liked it. Had a good story, gorgeous
cinematography in Venice, why it got such
bad reviews is a mystery. Even has a good
surprise ending.

I don't get the hate for The Tourist either. I liked it all three times I've seen it. I don't put much value on RT ratings.

Ricky Gervais made fun of it at
an awards ceremony and Johnny
Depp replied that it made $280
million at the BO. The critics
didn't like it, the audience did.

I misspoke in my first spoke, it was NOT
a BO flop. It was beautifully made,
with tons of famous locations.

"Stephanie Zacharek, a Rotten Tomatoes Top Critic, listed the film as one of her "10 Best Movies of 2010." She called it "a visually sensuous picture made with tender attention to detail and an elegant, understated sense of humor". Casey Burchby of DVD Talk acknowledged that the movie was "beautifully shot by the accomplished Oscar-winner John Seale, Alex Zane of The Sun said, "If you sit back, and enjoy the eye candy of the stars and locations, at least one cold winter night might fly by."

Even the boats in it are eye candy.

Favorite line of the movie, when Johnny Depp sees Jolie in her evening gown on the way to dinner, he says "you look ravenous"
Jolie: "Do you mean ravishing?"
Depp: "I do"
Jolie: "you're ravenous"
Depp: "I am"

Both Jolie and Depp walked thru this
movie, they gave very little to the
roles. The movie is the locale,
Paris and Venice, and the other
actors, the cops and the Mafia.
Jolie did little more than look
gorgeous and wear expensive
clothes. It was enough for me.
