The best, sci-fi, IMO, takes a creative look at where society is headed.

I took an English course on science fiction in college. The teacher said pretty much as you did, that good science fiction isn't really about far off places in distance or time but a social commentary on the present.

Right now I'm reading a bunch of Phillip
K Dick short stories from the 50's. You
can get anthologies of Sc/Fi on Amazon
Kindle insanely cheap, like 55 cents.

Sc/Fi has always been about predicting
the future, they're right sometimes, but
mostly not. It's always far less drastic
than they think it will be.

I have watched a few episodes of Philip K Dick's electric dreams.

In the early 60's I got Sci/Fi book of
the month for a bday. I got some
of Dick's novels as he wrote them.
Ubik scared me so much I never
read it again. And it's not a horror
book.

Alfred Hitchcock had a woman get away with killing her husband via a frozen leg of lamb by commenting at the end that when she tried the crime later she was caught because her absent minded husband had forgotten to plug the freezer in to the outlet. That took care of the Broadcast Standards and Practices stuff.

Hitchcock did this all the time on his TV show! The program would often show someone getting away with a crime, and after it was all over Hitchcock came on and gave a story about how they all got caught later. That full story is a famous one by a well known author [I forget who]. The woman not only is *not* caught but serves the leg of lamb to the detectives who come to quiz her .

A ridiculous work-around, but the show was popular plus Hitchcock himself had too much clout. I have three seasons of it in DVDs.

Good recommendation! I will try and avoid reading a summary as it might actually get turned into a movie after half a century.

I think I was 11 years old when that short story came out. Scared me speechless.

Too many for Singing in the Rain but that is all I can think of.

List of Adrian Messenger had a good many characters in disguise so they used Frank Sinatra. Robert Mitchum, etc. in cameo appearances that were de-costumized at the end of the movie.

I recognize 90% of them, but anybody
under 40 won't know even 10% I bet.

I only found one actor who is still alive. Bruce Dern. He was one of the 5 main characters. I might of made a mistake, but I think everyone else is dead.
