JimRockford Member since: Sep 18, 2015 Threads: 2 Posts: 971 | It was always high risk. People have been making fun of West Side Story since the 70s because if the absurdity of dancing street toughs. I want to see it just to see if Spielberg pulled it off. https://variety.com/2021/film/news/west-side-story-box-office-steven-spielberg-1235131598/ This article from Variety suggests that the poor first weekend box office could be because it appeals to an older audience and they don't tend to rush out during the first weekend. The audience may come around. I haven't seen it yet so I don't have an opinion. Maybe it will eventually succeed. Maybe reviving a 1961 Broadway musical was just never going to work. It's probably because it's woke. Yeah that must be it. The mind hungers for that on which it feeds. |

They're blaming that and covid and the economy, anything but the truth. Which is, half the movie is in Spanish without subtitles. This has even Latinos walking out because they are offended that wokeness is catering to them. Wokeness is saying, we're singling you out because we feel sorry for you because you have to sit through so many all English movies. People who have pride don't like being catered to. Plus the movie has 150 characters and it's 3 hours long. It puts the audience to sleep. Remember Spielberg's Blockbuster bomb 1941? Nobody saw that one either. The original West Side Story has been called the best musical ever made because of the choreography. Why would you ever try to top that. What an ego Spielberg must have. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

I do not like action movies unless they are non-fiction. If a movie has machine guns it better be a war film. If there is a car chase it better be actual footage of a true incident. I tried to watch a James Bond film 10 years ago and it started with a long car chase after about three minutes I had to turn it off. At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a detrrent. |

I enjoyed Nobody. My favorite part was getting to see Christopher Lloyd kick some ass. “A straight man will not go for kids.” - AZDuffman |

They shot real machine guns at actors in some older movies. You believe in an invisible god, and dismiss people who say they are trans? Really? |

That is kind of a massive understatement. From a billion and a half domestic tickets sold in 2002, they are at 406 million so far in 2021 and just barely cleared 223 million last year. Movies sold 410 million domestic tickets in 1972 before multiplexes and 612.6 million tickets in 1965 as TV was just starting to go universally color. Domestic Box Office $3,718,594,441 2021 ytd - 405,959,895 tickets sold $2,044,876,261 2020 full year - 223,239,573 tickets sold $11,255,475,182 2019 full year - 1,228,763,381 tickets sold ... $9,155,147,215 2002 full year - 1,575,756,527 tickets sold $8,296,849,636 2001 full year - 1,465,874,205 tickets sold The salvation of the domestic movie industry was young adults that wanted to get out of the house on a date. Now they simply park a car somewhere and watch movies on a tablet. |
