Vancouver International Airport remains customer favourite being named the Best Airport in North America named by air travellers at the 2014 World Airport Awards held at Passenger Terminal EXPO in Barcelona, Spain

1 Vancouver International Airport YVR Vancouver Canada
2 Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport CVG Cincinnati USA
3 Denver International Airport DEN Denver USA
4 San Francisco International Airport SFO San Francisco USA
5 Toronto Pearson Airport YYZ Toronto Canada
6 Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport ATL Atlanta USA
7 Halifax Stanfield Airport YHZ Halifax Canada
8 Seattle-Tacoma Airport SEA Seattle USA
9 Dallas/Fort Worth Airport DFW Dallas USA
10 New York JFK Airport JFK New York USA

I am a little surprised by JFK. I haven't been there for a long time, but it seemed like the third world to me.

Personally, I have always had a soft spot for Miami Airport, which seemed like the only airport that I actually wanted to be stranded in.

JFK depends on the terminal, I thought your exact words to describe jetBlue about 10 years ago but they remodeled it to a first class place.

I've flown some of those, and others too. I'd rate Vancouver as the nicest too. Some of the remodelled concourses are great, well laid out and almost calm spaces.

Sea-Tac is pretty good too, though more along the lines of a 'traditional' airport. Pearson has these fun travelators that accelerate in the middle via a clever sort of folding in the walkway.

The worse I've been through was Atlanta.

My soft spot is Maui Kalalui (OGG) airport, followed 2nd by Palm Springs (PSP). Strand me at either one with a bag of golf clubs.

YVR and YYZ are my home airports. I love YVR, can't STAND YYZ...

YYZ - way too far to walk from the parking lot to the gates, very long customs lines, very long lines for check in seemingly at all times.
DEN - really liked, but only been there twice
ATL - really did not like. Hallways too narrow.
YHZ - small airport, only been there once (honeymoon), so fond memories.
SEA - What? No. I hate terminals where you have to take a train.
DFW - huge airport, easy to navigate.
JFK - JetBlue terminal is cool, the rest is a dump.

I think an awful lot in that poll depends on where people have actually been. JFK, IMO, only makes that list because it's a major gateway/hub, so sheer number of people going through it matters. Same with ATL. Contrast either airport with PDX, for example (Portland, OR), and quality of restaurants, shopping, parking, amenities pricing, ease of reaching gates, beauty of concourses/atriums, are all comparable or better, but now that neither United nor Delta is using that airport as a hub, they don't get anywhere near the volume of travellers (as a percentage of the system) that ATL and JFK get. PHX (Phoenix, AZ) is another really well-designed, pleasant experience that didn't make the list.

I'm sure you are correct. It's amazing how busy Atlanta is compared to other airports in the country (scaled to Atlanta=100%). The airports that used to be much larger but lost most of their passengers (like Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and St Louis) usually get high grades because they have so much infrastructure.

Paco,

Fascinating list. Can you verify what the exact contrast is in calling them "busy"? This is not all commercial landings/takeoffs, right? Some kind of passengers served, including change of plane at hubs, maybe, as opposed to destination/origination only? Two that jump out at me are CVG and MEM, which are hubs for UPS and FedEx, respectively; both of which would rise appreciably in rank if it were based on Air Carrier operations.

Yes. Atlanta has terrible signage and one can easily observe confused people dragging luggage back and forth and missing their stations on the train. I once left the security area and had to get re-screened which took me two lines. Bad signage.

Every time I've been to Atlana, I had to shuffle between 3 gates. No way I could ever vote Atlanta as well designed.

Portland, OR on the other hand made photography illegal everywhere in the airport, so some musicians who were between planes gave an impromptu free concert in the cocktail lounge/piano area (Tickets for their concerts generally go for 35.00, so a free one is certainly a bargain). Yet some security guard came running up to stop the videotaping as if cocktail lounge, piano and blank wall were going to somehow aid in a terrorist hijacking. This would tend to make me a bit turned off by Portland.

Objective criteria are needed. How many cattle? How many electric prods?

A lits of "best" is meaningless without a reference as to what's being graded.

Say you posted the results of a race without posting the times of each runner, and not in the order of their arrival at the finish line, but only as who ran the race "best."

That said, how do you grade an airport? There are LOTS of thigns to consider, from parking, to public transportation access, to facilities, to distances travelled, to decor, ambiance, etc etc etc.

Far more valuable would be reviews of each airport.

Now, there's an idea.
