I believe LED scanners tend to work better with glass than the laser scanners.

Ok. But I still don't get how light reflects off a light-emitting image.

Imagine taking a photo on your cell phone, ok? Now, what happens if you put the phone flat on a scanner and try to scan the photo?

Final numbers are not yet in for 2014, but airports will fall short of the record 679,185,450 domestic passengers set in 2007. But they should still end up over 660 million.

On the other hand international passengers should break 190 million this year, setting a new record. LAX is busting out, but every international airport is expanding.LAX is now the terminus for 9 different A380 routes.

Still US Carriers are carrying less than half the foreign passengers. Since US carriers completely dominate air travel in North America, I must assume the lack of investment in the big planes is allowing foreign carriers to dominate the transoceanic flights.

I assume its like anything else... a passenger has to start at his local airport and from there hubs and spokes retain him until such time as he reaches a place of actual price competition. I don't know if US carriers even have those huge things with sleep areas for an entire pilot crew.

DL, AA, UA have Boeing 777s, which can fly over 8000 miles and over 16 hours. They all have sleeping quarters for the crew. The A330 which isn't capable of that range.

Boeing 777
American Airlines : Dallas/Fort Worth to Hong Kong :8,123 miles- 16:20 | Boeing 777-300ER
United Airlines : Newark to Hong Kong: 8,065 miles - 15:55 min | Boeing 777-200ER
Delta Air Lines :Atlanta to Johannesburg : 8,439 miles - 16:40 | Boeing 777-200LR

Boeing 787 - Dreamliner
United Airlines: San Francisco to Chengdu : 6,870 miles -14:30 |Boeing 787-8
United Airlines: Los Angeles to Melbourne : 7,921 miles -15:50|Boeing 787-9

Airbus A330-200
US Airways: Philadelphia to Tel Aviv : 5,754 miles - 13:10 | Airbus A330-200
Hawaiian Airlines : JFK to Honolulu : 5,654 miles- 11:00 |Airbus A330-200
Delta Air Lines :Detroit to Beijing: 6,631 miles-14:10|Airbus A330-200

All three airlines (DL, AA, UA) together have 155 B777s while Emirates has 143 B777s plus their fleet of A380s.

I wonder what airports impose as design costs ...

Consider military aircraft... they never have long landing gear, they have sturdy landing gear.

Civilian aircraft ... have long landing gear to raise the plane to the levels of a terminal's walkway.

I'm sure there is extra weight penalty as well as extra design of escape slides, etc.

Do we need to design new planes to what is perhaps an archaic concept in all those existing airports?

Note: Do any "Combi's" still exist. I think it was DeHavilland that had cargo/passengers on the same level in the far north?

BTW the new airport for Mex City is officially on.

In the course of my work I've run across open invitations for various construction projects related to it (ie roads leading there, temporary housing for workers, drainage infrastructure, etc).

Big percentage increases in number of passengers at MEX. Something like 6.9% from 2012-2013 and 8.6% from 2013-2014.

I'm sure our company is to blame for half of that. I've been wearing out the airline request file form for months now.

The Boise airport is nice. Clean, big, and uncrowded.

Midway airport Chicago
Dissapointed in number of seats at every gate.
Many modern airports these days have enough seats at each gate to accomodate most travellers
Midway, about 20 to 30 seats a gate that handles planes sitting 150.
I ended up sitting on the floor waiting to board.
