Maybe you should check on the models the Cubans had to keep running.

Their Detroit motors were all pulled decades ago.

Oh yeah, and the sonofabitch Will Not stay in gear.

Oh, and another thing! This heap of mess just quits, almost every day. I don't mean it "turns off", cuz it doesn't. I don't mean it "stops running" because it doesn't. It... just quits. No loss of electric, motor still running, but it's as if the throttle cable snapped. Only it comes off throttle far faster than you can recreate by foot; the engine braking is so sudden I first thought I had a bearing fail.

But it doesn't stop running. The ECU doesn't recheck, no CELs come on, if I push the clutch, it'll rest right at idle. But if I rev it, nada. Like it's not connected.

And thennn, eventually, power will come back ever so slowly. Like the THQ sound effect at half speed, or slowly turning the radio knob. And then, ~10sec later... it's all the way up and fine again.

Pretty sure that's the last thing.

I had more evidence given today that I am an antique.

As I mentioned in another thread, an old guy out of nowhere [because I didn't have a sign or advertise] stops, knocks on my door and asks me if there was anyway I would part with my pickup. I figured, wth I haven't driven it 150 miles in over 3 years, only to go get the oil changed new tires and battery's. : )

The guy takes it around a few blocks and we agree on a price.

I thought I had the title in a file, turns out the file was in a safe deposit box at the bank. Now from past experience, when I bought the truck, when I transferred the title to me, [as I have done numerous times] I requested the title say "either me or my wife" not "me and my wife", you all probably know why.

Apparently Az. didn't agree with me at the time, filled out the title to only me, so I have to be the one relinquishing ownership. In the past, that has been onerous, as I was somewhere else when it wouldn't have been most convenient to transfer, yada yada.

Things have changed, gone are the days when I could just sign the title, enter mileage, fill out a simple bill of sale, get satisfactory payment and let the new owner be on their way. No no, that's not how this is going to be. Now, title signatures have to be notarized. Still, not to big of a deal, seeing as how the bank has notary's on duty, most of the time. But I can see where, if I were travelling this could be much more difficult.

My wife went to the bank for me, to get the title. In my faded memory, I thought she could sign for us in front of the notary, seeing as how time after time, we always have deeds and such put in either of our names, not both. Didn't happen, Az. didn't or wouldn't put it in either of our names on the title, I have to go to the bank with two picture ID's, sign in front of a notary, and I don't know what else.

So, I call the bank, they don't/won't put a notary on the phone, only relay between a teller, me, and a notary? I ask teller,,, does the buyer need to sign in front of a notary? Wait, chamber music,,,,,Mr. Petro?[me] Yes. [her] I don't think so. [me] Do I need to have a bill of sale notarized? Wait, chamber music,,,,,[her]I'm not sure......[me]can I speak with a notary?[her] Why don't you come down in about twenty minutes and you can sit with one?.....[me]I wasn't sure I wanted to come in today, I wanted to know what all I had to have, just to sell my truck to someone.....[her]You will have to speak with a notary.....[me]That's why I'm calling.....I'm trying to limit my exposure to the plague [I didn't say plague, that would probably sound threatening]. I don't yammer about it much, but this is difficult for me being immune compromised.

Things has changed.

Hahaha, you dumb idiot. Why must you continue to speak Its name out loud?

I definitely have no 5th gear anymore. I made sure of it.

10.6mpg now. Good thing gas is cheaper than Pepsi.

This is not worth its own thread but I might have had the worst auto failure of my life last week.

Car was making a tapping sound. Like a tapping valve for all you old motorheads. I got it inspected and popped for a tune-up to see if it would solve the tap. It didn't so I planned to just put some Rislone in to try to quiet it. Car had stalled twice recently before, unusual but I chalked it up to low oil which pushed me to the tune-up. A now wasted $200.

Why? Well, car was acting the same, then got real bad, could hardly keep it running. I was getting some pretzels for a college-buddy get-together. Lucky I did because otherwise it would have happened on the trip. I could barely hold 40mph on the interstate on the way home. I have limped cars home before and knew how to do it. Engine died one last time but I drifted it to and down the exit. Tow it to dealer. This was Friday.

I get the call on Monday. Says I have a hole in the cylinder. Engine was seized so I had resigned myself to $5-6000 in repairs.

Good news is it is some kind of warranty extension, Hyundai sending a new engine! Today she showed me the picture. Not a hole, a crater! Size of a baseball! I will post if they finally send me a copy.

Supposedly it is a "known issue" so hence the replacement. Talk about grateful!

Fantastic!!! How old is your Hyundai? I believe they offer 10 year powertrain warranty.

"Worst failure"

I'd reubuilt a '79 Jeep Cherokee Chief and noticed while it was idling in the driveway that smoke came billowing out of engine bay.

An electricalfire.

Used up a fire extinguisher to get it out.

Lot of rewiriing and clean up but fortunately I got it fixed.

Another time, my Volvo 740 died enroute to the casino; knowing that the fuel pump relay is the usual culprit I had a spare with me, but the spare didn't cure the problem, so I paid (ouch) $700 for a tow through the coast range back to my home.

Come to find out that the problem was in fact a bad fuel pump relay: both the one in the car and my spare were bad.

2015 but I am over mileage as I run my cars to death. Or used to. Last year due to lockdown I was emission exempt!

Next car is almost for sure a Hyundai as are all since 2005. One was an old model bought cheap and kept having issues. But it was a 2003, and I actually moved backwards from a 2005! That they are taking care of it probably ensures I will buy them again. That new Maverick is tempting though.
