I heard a snippet today that said some 25 trillion gallons have fallen so far. Obviously that's an impossible number to grasp, so stated differently, the amount of water that has fallen in Houston would power Niagara Falls for an entire year. A year. A f#$%ing YEAR.

This right here is the Great Lakes basin. Every drop of water that falls in any of this area is bound to come over the Falls. So all of the rain, all of the snow, the sleet, the ice, every bit of precipitation that falls over 8 states and a province over the course of one whole year done dumped on Houston in 3 days time.

Gaaaaaaht DAMN!

As an aside, I hope RonC's absence during this time is due to him whuppin' the dog s#$% out of Joel Olsteen all up and down the block. Give 'im a kick for me, RonC.

Primitive vehicles. Wright brothers hadn't even flown yet. That's what they had to work with in 1900 rescue operations.

Galveston 1900 was Category 4. Harvey? Category 4. And yes, Harvey's wind also exceeded 130 mph.

In 1900 it killed over 10K, Harvey has killed
what, 50? The fact that you think Harvey is
even in the ballpark shows how desperate
you are. It's laughable.

Alot of confusion.
Some people evacuated their homes but left pets but now need boat rides back to get them as water rose beyond all expectations.

A new analysis from the University of Wisconsin’s Space Science and Engineering Center has determined that Harvey is a 1-in-1,000-year flood event that has overwhelmed an enormous section of  Southeast Texas equivalent in size to New Jersey.

There is nothing in the historical record that rivals this, according to Shane Hubbard, the Wisconsin researcher who made and mapped this calculation. “In looking at many of these events [in the United States], I’ve never seen anything of this magnitude or size,” he said. “This is something that hasn’t happened in our modern era of observations.”

Hubbard made additional calculations that accentuate the massive scale of the disaster:

At least 20 inches of rain fell over an area (nearly 29,000 square miles) larger than 10 states, including West Virginia and Maryland (by a factor of more than two).
At least 30 inches of rain fell over an area (more than 11,000 square miles) equivalent to Maryland’s size.

What do you consider a dire situation?

How many times have you had to call 911 after falling out of your La-Z-Boy recliner? Did you hassle them for taking longer than 5 minutes?

If death is the only metric, you're right. Harvey is barely a blip. (By any other metric, Harvey was an enormous storm.)

The 1976 earthquake in Tangshan, China (magnitude 7.5) killed at least 250,000 people (though some estimates say 650,000.)
The 1960 earthquake in Valdivia, Chile (magnitude 9.5) only killed 6,000 people (maybe less.)

Which earthquake was worse? In terms of energy released, Chile's earthquake was 1,000 times stronger than China's. The Chile quake lasted 10 minutes, which is #*&%@!! crazy long for an earthquake.

Mind-boggling.

Here's another description: 25 trillion gallons of water would equal rainfall over the entire United States (including Alaska) of 0.38 inches.
