I think the point was that driving a high performance car into a stone wall will wreck the car and driver but if it wrecks but does not kill the driver then there is likely to be someone wanting free health care for the duration of his vegetative state and that we should not have to fund that.

Oh no. not at all. In nature the frog and the scorpion each drown. In a Nanny State situation, adventure, imagination , boldness and masculinity all disappear as the individual is ensnared in a boring cocoon of safety and good intentions but the Nanny State continues and exerts even greater efforts "for the common good".
