I help take care of people with broken ribs. We often do what are called intercostal nerve blocks with a new drug called exparel. Takes away the pain for a few days, so that the patient can still take normal breaths. It is the inability to take a deep breath that often starts the downward spiral. If there are multiple severe breaks we even sometimes put in an epidural, similar to what we do for laboring women.
Of course I know nothing about the specifics of RBG's case, but most rib fracture patients go on to a complete recovery nowadays.

Would these drugs be contraindicated in a patient with Reactive Asthma for two months. Several inhalers with little benefit, 50mg Prednisone, one lung cloudy on imaging but no antibiotics Rx'd. She is lifelong rat lover but its the Acacia trees and other debris blown by the Australian hot winds of the season that is probable cause. Barely able to take shallow breaths, no deep breaths at all.
