one of the curious things about the US is the proportion of suicides in gun deaths

from wikipedia

Its the primary reason why I don't own a gun

I would take that chart with a grain of salt. For the US they show more gun related suicides than total suicides. HOW? The antigun crowd wouldn't play with the numbers would they?

The green bar is not total suicides. It's what's left after accounting for gun-related suicides - every method EXCEPT guns.

Yes my bad I didn't read the graph carefully enough. Notice that S. Korea has the highest rate and not a gun in site. Hmmmm

Yeah, I was looking at that, too. It's not even close. I wonder what that's about? I'm thinking a cultural thing.

I remember doing some research into their culture after a KAL crash. Part of the official conclusion was a cultural mismatch between good cockpit resource management and Korean regimented culture, which allowed a Captain to kill everyone, unquestioned (at least effectively) by his crew.

I can see where, in a culture where face is everything and shame and dishonor are unbearable, there would be either direct or inferred pressure to kill oneself rather than continue past an unforgivable error or sin. But I really don't know how strong that pressure is there any more.

You are probably on the right line Japan is pretty much the same. I was reading an article yesterday about the tremendous pressure there is in S. Korea to get into a top university and that a lot of students commit suicide. Don't know if that is a lot of it or not. This article also said that if you didn't have that university degree you were a second class citizen.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_in_Japan

"Typically, most suicides are men; 71% of suicide victims in 2007 were male.[2] In 2009, the number of suicides among men rose 641 to 23,472 (with those aged 40–69 accounting for 40.8% of the total). Suicide was the leading cause of death among men aged 20–44.[5][6] Males are two times more likely to cause their own deaths after a divorce than females are.[10] Nevertheless, suicide is still the leading cause of death for women age 15–34 in Japan.[5][11]"

Japan even has a suicide forest. "A frequent location for suicides is in Aokigahara, a forested area at the base of Mount Fuji"

In regards to suicide it appears Japan is more tolerant than the US. "The general attitude toward suicide has been termed "tolerant", and in many occasions suicide is seen as a morally responsible action"

I don't pretend to be an expert on Korea but I've spent some time there working with engineers at one of our suppliers. The work culture is brutal. Very long days and a stressful environment with a strict hierarchy, almost military like. To blow off steam they are expected (essentially required) to attend late night heavy drinking sessions with coworkers and bosses. How's that working for you, Korea?

Sounds like they learned it from Japan.

Kellen Winslow jr in the news for his rape trial
Sports Illustrated did a story on him and I have to say I am pretty disgusted
Apparently the guy is addicted to porn and masturbates to it all the time
If somebody is in the room, he really doesn't care
Nobody wanted to share a room with him on the road because all he does is watch porn and masturbate in front on his roomie
People would walk into a locker room, and there's Kellen masturbating to porn
On a team plane, the seat next to him was always empty because he watches hard core porn the whole flight

You're afraid you'll kill yourself with it?
That's what chart is about.

I believe Terp has you blocked so he won't answer but I believe that's exactly what he meant. He's mentioned it before. A rational position for someone struggling with depression.

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/megan-rapinoe-national-anthem-sing-us-soccer-world-cup-211549494.html

Why is this news?
I've lived in this country almost my entire life
I have never ever sang the national anthem
And
I come from Baltimore, the home of the anthem
I have to admit I yell "O" at the right time in the middle of the anthem but that's a Baltimore thing. We all do it in Baltimore. Tradition
