Unfortunately, we didn't get to the top of Multnomah Falls. We got about half way there but the kids were complaining so we took a vote and I got outvoted and down we went. To be honest, I'm kind of bitter about it. My kids don't seem to appreciate natural beauty at all. I think they would say, "You've seen one waterfall, you've seen them all." Then again, I might have said the same thing as a kid too.

I hiked to the top of the falls around Christmas 2006. I took some pics with a digital Nikon Coolpix, but they must be on an old computer I have in storage. Sorry! The trail ends right at the TOP of the falls, you can almost touch the water as it goes over the edge and it's very loud. and wet. and cold.

And I agree that the drive from The Dalles to Portland on the Oregon side is one magical journey. Very nice. Nicer than the east-bound trip on the same road I think because of the views of the Gorge which aren't as visible on that divided highway.

Living in Las Vegas was okay for a couple years I guess, but I'll never regret coming back to the Pacific NW.

I always think about moving to Vegas because
of all the casinos, but I know I would hate it
there. I wish they had built Vegas where Reno
is, but no. They built it in a brown hot wasteland.
If they built a few casinos in Hawaii I would move
back there tomorrow.

You're just making me more bitter about getting outvoted on finishing the hike. That is the problem with going from two to three kids -- they outnumber the adults. Before the third was born we had a rule that in the event of a 2-2 tie, parents vs. kids, the tie went to the grown ups.

To be honest, I'm getting tired of Vegas and leaving isn't out of the question. If I do, you can find me in Oregon or Washington somewhere.

Mike,

Sounds like a great tour. I love the PNW as well.

Mistake number 1 - giving children a vote!

What would you be the Wizard of if you left Vegas? What would you do?

I hate to get off topic, but if I don't turn things around financially with my sites I may sell them. What I would do next would depend on how much I got for the sites.

That would kill the whole idea of WoVCon, too.

Oh, well, by internet time it's lasted decades. By internet message board time, it's lasted two whole eternities already.

I would guess you're tired of the heat, the non
view, the flatness, the people, the crime,
the homeless, to name just a few things.

What is it you're tired of.

Here are the things I'm tired of about last Vegas.

  • Summer heat.
  • Nowhere close to do water sports.
  • Lack of class.
  • Among the worst public schools in the country.
  • No community spirit. People come here, live a few years, and leave. You very seldom meet an adult who has lived here his/her whole life.
  • Very few family-owned businesses. Everything is a franchise of a big chain.
  • Too materialistic.
  • No elite public universities to send my kids to.
  • Lousy health care.

I'm sure I'll think of more things to add to the list.

However, I'm also the kind of person who gets bored with things. I've lived here 13 years and feel that is a little too long. I previously lived in Baltimore for 10. After my trip to Oregon and Washington, I really could picture myself in the Pacific northwest somewhere.

How does the Wizard of Washington grab you?

I would dislike it for other reasons, I agree on heat.

Traffic
Tourists
Homeless
Sameness, the whole town looks the same.
Too flat and colorless.
Crime
Cost of living.

I like living where it's green in the summer. Where
I can drive by corn fields and winding hilly roads
2 min from my house. It's almost like Vegas isn't a
place to live, it's like your sentenced there. Maybe
your sentence is almost up, Wiz.
