I didn't know they were connected to credit cards. Thought briefly they had their own system a sec. Boring in this case.

The “tap and go” system relies on a new payment technology called tokenization. In place of your payment card number, a 16-digit proxy is stored in a security chip in the phone. That number, which is the token, is given to the retailer when a purchase is made, meaning your actual payment card number does not get handed around.
The retailer sends the token through its payment network to Visa, Mastercard or American Express. Those card issuers identify the number as a token and pass it to a trusted third party, which converts it to the original card number and sends it back to the issuer.

The RFID chips are making “tap and go” possible, but they still rely on passing your credit card number around.

The new Apple technology doesn't so much improve the ease of the transaction as its security. Obviously this data breach at Home Depot is the best advertising Apple could hope for.

"Just" Apple? That's a pretty ignorant statement considering that the iPhone is the most popular phone in the world.

But with that said, this isn't going to replace credit cards because it doesn't make the task of purchasing things easier at all. In fact, it adds more steps to the process.

Think about it. What's easier: Pulling out a small, almost weightless plastic card and swiping it? Or grabbing your cell phone, taking it out of its case, turning it on, navigating to the desired app, activating it, and THEN completing the transaction???

+1

Your statement would be fine if it was true. iPhone is still the most popular in North America by a hair but Samsung has twice the market share worldwide.

It's big because it circumvents the credit card companies. Fees would be lower and retailers would favor it. Could even be used between private parties to settle debts which would never otherwise consider using credit cards. The watch uses the same tech and seems interesting. Questionable if people will wear watches again, but if they do, they sure will never wear two. Loyalty to apple could be huge if the watch succeeds because nobody is used to wearing them anymore and apple is the only one with a watch.

You should really get out of the apple box more often.

"Still, even with the impending release of the Moto 360, Apple still has to face their rival Samsung in the release of smartwatches, which Samsung has been doing long before Apple released the Apple Watch."

That's because Samsung offers more than one phone.

3, 3GS, 4, 4S seems like more apple might possibly have more than 1 phone. More owners have 4 than 4S which is newer. Presales on 5 are 200m.

The study seems to mirror Gartner Inc's figures that Samsung sold 300m smartphones last year, which is 31% of the nearly 1bn sold globally, and double that of Apple.

All you've done is name different iterations of the SAME phone. Samsung has numerous phone models, which is why they sell so many.

(Also, the iPhone 5 has been discontinued for over a year now)

You're missing the entire point. Go back and look at the post I initially replied to. I was responding specifically to a person who said "just Apple", as if Apple is a minor player in the smartphone market. Apple is about as major as you can get.

I think you haven't noticed that the Apple has fallen from the tree. 4Q13 Android sales 78.1% 4Q13 IOS sales 17.6% of total smartphone sales.

Apple is second but only a 1/4 of the sales of android phones not sure that qualifies as "as major as you can get". They likely will have a much better year in 2014 with the release of the 6 but unlikely to become the leading system again.

Don't know how this became an Apple vs. Android discussion, but take a look at how much money iTunes makes. That alone shows how wrong terapined was when he called Apple a "minor" player.

Certainly tokenization used in data security as well as biometrics have been around much longer than Apple, but the hope is that Apple's marketing power will make it commonplace.

Certainly Apple is the largest company in the world by market capitalization for 11 of the past 12 quarters when it passed Exxon Mobil. Samsung Electronics was as high as #8 in 4th quarter 2012 when it was less than half of Apple.
