Cab driving for
the majority of drivers is a career, it's
not a hobby they do after dinner, when
they feel like it.

So you are OK with an industry that blatantly discriminates against people entering the business?

As to a "career" I hardly think so. I see all kinds of ads for part time drivers.

Career is not a word I want to hear associated with a professional driver.

I used to own a cab co, 85% are career drivers.
There's a lot of freedom driving a cab. You
work as hard or not as hard as you like. You
take a dinner break whenever you like, where
you like, for as long as you like. You can go
home and take a nap if you like, or see a
movie. One of my drivers had 3 girlfriends
and he would go to one of their houses
and get laid almost every night.

You work alone, you're your own boss. You
work for cash. It's a job that appeals to a
lot of people, who do it for decades.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Sounds more like Uber than cab work. In a cab you have to pay rent to the medallion owner or/and owner of the cab itself. No dispatcher is going to tolerate a driver seeing movies and letting the cab sit. With Uber you get all of what you just said, which is why so many people find it appealing.

The licence holders here generally just care that their daily rent on the car is paid. The drivers do what they want on taking fares from dispatch. There's no direct compulsion. You want cash? You work. Simple economic system.

Downside is over last five years, drivers are seeing less work and less money over all.

I just saw a story today on MSN and I think somewhere else. Analysts are starting to warn investors to quit looking for the next "the Uber of 'X'." While taxi and hotel services need more flexibility and are markets that can be cracked, it will not keep going on. Food delivery is not giving the margins of the two formers. Sanity may be returning same as in 1999 when people saw how fast the dotcoms of that era were burning cash with no profit in sight.

Maybe another thing is how limited some of these markets are. Many people need rides to the airport, but how many need dinner delivered from a place that does not already offer it?

I've never had food delivered to me
even once in my whole life. It would
never even occur to me. I knew a
lady teacher who was single and made
good money. She had all he meals
delivered, each from a different place
every day. Her kitchen had no food in
it. She also weighed about 225 the last
time I saw.

Most people get a pizza or similar now and then, but boy it would get pricey.

Lady teacher sounds like a kitchenista.

She was lazy. Her house was always a mess
too, her clothes were everywhere. And she
was in her 40's.

Sounds like she missed her calling and should have been a cab driver.

The company supplies the cars and the radio and the riders....and usually nickle and dimes the drivers by charging them mileage, etc.

Uber supplies cars and drivers in response to customer needs at rush hours such as 'nightclub closing time'... not often a place cabs want to be. Usually a cab called to a bar gets a 'no customer' since the unruly drunk has quieted down or settled on 'second choice of a companion for the night'.
