Hmm. Good point. I tend to think these things are somewhat home made. How many generals were there in the Army? It's not like they needed to mass produce these things.

There is usually 1 at every major base. Whereas outpost bases like MASH would have a Colonel, or lesser rank.

But there's a group at the Pentagon.

That is why Operation Barbarossa was so successful at first. Everyone who knew how to run things was killed before the invasion started.

I always thought it looked very cool how general's went around in a special jeep with their number of stars on the front license plate. A down side is this probably wouldn't be considered a real license plate by the club. I do have a decent number of military-related license plates so it would fit in well to my collection.



Worth asking is why do the stars point down, while they point up on the flag?

That looks homemade to me. Still cool, though.

I would think the screws go on the bottom.

My dad had a plate mounted like that. It folded down to access the gas cap in a cadillac. Think some buicks did, too.

This might be upside down. The holes might
be at the bottom. That way the stars would
be pointing correctly. In fact, I just looked
them up and every plate that had only
two holes, they were always at the bottom.

If I had to guess, these kind of plates were used
on base only. There's no way a general
would drive in a vehicle in a combat
area that identified it as belonging to a
general. They were always a target and
the enemy would take them out first
when possible. On an Army base though,
the officers cars would need to be marked.

Here is a very unique and rare license plate currently on Ebay: RARE Soviet Military Mission USAREUR License Plate #8 with Related Documentation. I've seen a similar one with a U.S. flag, I believe a very limited run of the U.S. consulate in West Berlin.

This would truly be a license plate with a story to tell and would be a proud part of my collection. I'm considering throwing in a bid of around $1,000 but I think it will close much higher. Some collectors love unusual rare plates like this with a high eye candy factor.
