| rxwine Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 217 Posts: 22955 | A vaccine can be really well-matched to a virus, but that's not the whole story, since the condition of a person's immune system, various mutations, and the amount of virus a person first encounters all will affect the efficacy. The vaccine is like a training program for an army. But your army (immune system) sometimes isn't very resilient and responds like the Afghan army to all the training. (usually older people or people with certain conditions.) When the virus mutates enough, the army may be well trained for certain offenders but the virus comes in with better stealth and your army misses a lot of the incoming forces. The virus gets inside enemy lines, and does more damage before your army gets a good handle on things. Sometimes, the virus arrives with overwhelming forces. Some people just get a large exposure initially. Even if your army is well trained, the amount of work to initially take care of it strains the resources. Also in some case your army is over effective, sets off the nukes, and may destroy you and virus in the process. But we can usually save people from that if we act in time. Ask SOOPOO. He’s a doctor. He’s done a good job repeatedly explaining it to our pro-Covid members. “A straight man will not go for kids.” - AZDuffman |

Frankly, Rxwine did a great job a few posts back. But, FROM THE BEGINNING, the vaccines were never expected to give 100% of the people 100% immunity. And with each mutation the original vaccines are somewhat less effective. But to me, the BOTTOM LINE is that you have a MUCH LOWER chance of dying, or even getting really sick, if you have been vaccinated than if you haven’t. The dead and dying are predominantly unvaccinated now. Can you find an exception? Sure. Luckily for ALL, Omicron seems very ineffective as a killer. |

These may seem a trivial point, but viruses don’t ‘want’ anything. What it will do is infect a host, and like anything with genetic material it will from time to time mutate to be slightly different. Over time, the viruses now with slight changes (aka variants) that allow the host (us humans) to survive and pass it along more frequently will TEND TO be selected for to survive (theory of evolution). But that does not mean IN THE SHORT TERM that a new variant can’t be MORE LETHAL than the pre existing version of the virus. The concept holds for any parasite, not just viruses. As far as COVID-19, I believe that ‘Delta’ was considered more lethal than whatever it evolved from. Edit…. Can a moderator move this and the past few pages of posts to the Coronavirus thread? |
