Sometimes, I find myself wistful for the days in ancient times when rhetoric was thought a valued skill, essential for success in life.

You're probably just having romantic notions of being punished like Socrates for being a smart ass.

Have you ever heard of something more brilliant than Socrates claiming his actions deserved a reward rather than punishment? :)

I can picture him thinking "Sure, I will be executed. But did you see their faces when I said that?"

Actually it's hard to know what Socrates ever said. He left nothing behind. All "his" works were written by Plato long after Socrates passed away. Though I like to think the story of the Oracle is true. Upon hearing an Oracle declared him the wisest man in Athens, Socrates replied "If I am the wisest man in Athens, it's because I alone know that I know nothing."

Back on topic, it's distressing how incoherent political discourse has become, especially among many high-ranking politicians. If you brought Caesar back to life now, never mind Cicero, he'd be appalled at what passes for political discourse these days.

I've never quite figured out whether spitting in the eye of the leader of the firing squad is a brave or foolish act, I certainly know its a futile one.

As to Socrates:
Did he actually live in a barrel?
Was he really killed for being gay? I think that with all those jokes about Greeks, that would be unlikely but then again hemlock is better than the hot poker one of those English kings got.

Bring Caesar back to life? I'd rather bring Diogenes back to life and ask him if anyone ever stole his lantern?

Yeah, beats having to wash the silverware every six months.

Why do people use monotone robotic voices on youtube videos? Is their real voice that terrible? I always give those a thumbs down.

OTOH, I don't mind simple animation as long is it gets the message across (if there is one).
