I probably started a half dozen recorded movies from the DVR the other night many with high ratings and couldn't get through them.

I find most movies unwatchable now. Very
seldom do I find one worth my time. Like
last night, I looked for 10min at Prime
and Nflix and settled on Jackie Brown
because I've seen it 5 times and know it's
great. Everything else looked like crap.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

I think that was 2005.

Oops, lost a decade, and it wasn't even the 60s.

Started watching "Serenity" from 1995 and it finally held my attention to watch it all the way though. Never saw the Firefly series so wasn't familiar with any backstory.

The movie pretty much explained the details so it would stand alone. I think it would be OK to watch the series afterwards.

Firefly averaged 4.7 million viewers per episode and the movie Serenity sold 4 million estimated tickets in Northern America. In 2002 an average of 4.7 million viewers barely got the series ranked in the top 100 series. Today Fox is renewing shows like Brooklyn 99 with only 2.87 million viewers.

I think Firefly only aired 11 of the 14 episodes. It probably has the most devoted fan base of a TV series with so few episodes.

No one did. That's why it was cancelled :)

One of my favorites. Hope you enjoyed it! The series relates individual one-hour episodes while also developing an ongoing background story. When the series was cancelled, the background story was left hanging. So they made the movie which only tells the background story and brings it to a conclusion. IMO, this is one of the most responsible things that Hollywood has ever done.

Forgive my forgetfulness as I haven't seen either Firefly or Serenity in many years, but I was confused as to which took place first. As I recall, there were a couple main characters introduced in the movie who had been on board during the series the whole time, making it seem like Serenity was first, but an different major character dies in the movie, making it seem Serenity took place after Firefly. You regulars will know which characters I mean so no spoilers. Both were great though, kinda stand-alone.

I don't remember any main characters that were in the movie seem like a prequel.

Two of the nine television characters die in the movie, as they could not commit to a sequel. However, as the movie didn't make money there was no sequel anyway.

  1. Nathan Fillion as Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds
  2. Gina Torres as Zoe Alleyne Washburne
  3. Alan Tudyk as Hoban "Wash" Washburne
  4. Morena Baccarin as Inara Serra
  5. Adam Baldwin as Jayne Cobb
  6. Jewel Staite as Kaywinnet Lee "Kaylee" Frye
  7. Sean Maher as Dr. Simon Tam
  8. Summer Glau as River Tam
  9. Ron Glass as Derrial Book

For the most part, the movie and the series cover the same time span. There isn't really a "first" and "next". As I said earlier, the movie kind of condenses the background story which ran throughout the series but was never completed. Also, they didn't really go out of their way to make sure everything in the movie was exactly like the series. Some liberties were taken, which probably led to a better movie.

Nathan Fillion successful TV series, Castle, made half a dozen references to Firefly over it's eight years. At least three Firefly stars made guest appearances on Castle.

Adam Baldwin: Det. Ethan Slaughter (3 episodes, 2012-2015)
Gina Torres: Penelope Foster (1 episode, 2013)
Jewel Staite: Erin Cherloff (1 episode, 2016)
