Looks like Steven Spielberg's West Side Story which the critics are calling Woke Side Story is a gigantic flop of epic proportions. Nobody's going to see this turkey. So far it's only made 10 million in the United States and a pitiful 5 million in Europe. Which is next to nothing. Critics are saying it's a three-hour lecture on political correctness from Hollywood. Everywhere you turn the saying 'go woke go broke' is turning out to be true. The world is sick of it.

Nope. It's either good or it isn't.

Why is West Side Story “woke?” lol

Was the 1961 version woke too?

Yep, Spielberg bent over backwards to make this turkey as politically correct as possible. And nobody cares. It has to make three hundred million dollars to make a profit and it's not even going to make enough to pay for the movie let alone make a profit. Disney screwed the pooch on this one. Spielberg's biggest miscalculation was back when he started planning this in 2018 and making it in 2019 being woke was the big thing. It was everywhere it looked like it was here to stay. Then the crazies on the Left got ahold of it and of course they ruined it. Today you can't even get somebody to admit they were even in the woke movement. People are blaming covid on the small audiences but that didn't stop people going to the new James Bond movie.

This is likely because no normal person has any idea what “the woke movement” even means.

To be fair (I have not seen the movie, and probably never will, not a Westside Story fan, never liked the play or movie), I suspect a lot of the "woke issues" are Disney not Spielberg.

I remeber reading an article at least a couple years (I think pre-COVID) that Spielberg wanted to make it very faithful to the original, but Disney bought it out during production and then were changing a lot to make it more "family friendly", even going so far as editing out smoking, and Spielberg was upset about the decisions, but basically had no choice but to go along.

I don’t buy that for a second.

There is zero chance a director like Spielberg will sign on to a movie without having final cut (aka no studio interference allowed).

My understanding is that the studio that he had the contract with was bought out by Disney after production had begun and Disney forced a lot of "family friendly" changes during production that they viewed as necessary in every Disney film and were basically non-negotiable.

Again I am trying to recall an article from several years ago right after the buy-out, I will link it if I can find it, but that sounds roughly right.

Gotta think the movie theater business model we're used to is falling apart due to covid and streaming.

Local theaters are open but not nearly as busy as they were pre-covid.
