I'm thinking of doing the River Mountains Loop this Wednesday as well.

Is River Mountains Loop the same one as when you climbed Mt Charleston? Are you going to put on the 150 mm on the 29" for this one, or are you going to keep toughing them out?

No. That is a 34-mile circular route near Lake Mead. It is quite hilly so I plan to do it on my 29" and 125mm cranks.

Long term, I'm thinking of doing the Camino de Santiago on a unicycle.

The real SooPoo did the trek last summer. She didn't mention seeing any unicyclists.....

The steepest parts had a 7.8% slope, or angle of 4.5 degrees.

The Eshima Ohashi Bridge in Japan is nearly a mile long, and has a gradient of 6.1 percent on one side and 5.1 percent on the other. Pish posh, the Wizard could unicycle right across that bridge with no trouble. You should include that in your Survivor application.

BTW, I never did end up doing the River Mountains Loop on unicycle. Since the Lee Canyon challenge I have cut back on the unicycling. I have started to get back into Boot Camps, which I attend Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I also need in better shape for my Mt Hood and Mt Saint Helens trip in June.

Let me also announce that I will be attempting to climb Mount Rainier in August.

I'm thinking about doing a 51-mile ride for my 51st birthday.

One thing that holds be back is I still have a mental block about mounting the 36" unicycle. I know how, but I don't know that I know how. So some days I just stand there and have a hard time to get up the nerve to do it. It is especially hard when I'm tired.

So, I considered doing it on my 29" unicycle. I've debated with myself about this last time. To help, I timed myself on a 1.39 mile course around my neighborhood. Here are the results:

36" unicycle: 9 minutes, 13 seconds. Average speed = 9.02 MPH
29" unicycle: 11 minutes, 3 seconds. Average speed = 7.55 MPH

Pretty big difference. I think I could increase my speed on the 29" with shorter crank arms, but that would take me up to 8 MPH tops.

The ride on the 36" is much smoother and comfortable. There is a lot of pitch on the 29" and it is simply a choppy ride in comparison.

It would be ideal to have a bicyclist follow along with me on the 36" unicycle, to assist with mounting if I need it. Any volunteers?

Doesn't practicing with a handrail help? Seems like a couple hundred times, it would be easy.

Soon you may have a new unicycle challenge.

I do the equivalent of that with some shelves in my garage. However, once I get away from it I freeze up. It is kind of like sky diving -- the hard part is just taking that leap of faith and jumping.
