The elf from the 1964 TV special, "Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer" is referred to as both, "Herbie" and "Hermey".

I came across a commemorative stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the show. The post office, appears to have settled on "Hermey". But I think "Herbie" is more fun.

That was my initial thought too, but the first Herbie / Love Bug movie came out in 1968, four years after Rudolph debuted on TV.

You don't think Disney would sue the Postal Service? Remember they sued the Academy over the use of Snow White for an opening number of an Oscar ceremony.
