This likely isn't the right thread for this question, but since we're discussing great actors and money makers, here's a serious question for the movie buffs:

What new actors these days will be remembered as classically great in 40 years?

We can all agree on the Robert DeNiros, the Meryl Streeps, Anthony Hopkins and Jack Nicholsons as being great, while actors like Marlon Brando used to be great, but fell off the charts becoming a joke of sorts decades ago. Who starting out now will be remembered in 40 years as the greatest of our generation?

Bradley Cooper?
Michael Fassbender?
Jennifer Lawrence?

I was thinking about the same type of discussion/split and then saw yours, so I bet there's room for a new thread on this question.

My list would include Bradley Cooper; he's only just starting to find his range, and it's huge. Most likely to be the next deNiro or Duvall IMO, though he's already 40.
LeeLee Sobieski showed HUGE chops as a teen but seems to have faded; I think she still has the talent. Hard to believe she's only 31, but was wonderful in Eyes Wide Shut and Never Been Kissed, both released 16 years ago.
Benedict Cumberbach would also make my list, though he's 38. He's just crossed the star line in the last couple years where he's going to get the chance to show his range, but has already impressed me enormously with his Sherlock and Turing.
There was a time when I couldn't take my eyes of Evan Rachel Wood, 27, think she has the talent but derailed somehow in the last couple of years.
Jen Lawrence, 24, hasn't quite made me think Streep (not sarcasm), but maybe she has more to offer as she matures.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 34, I think he's just starting to get the attention he deserves and has demonstrated great range. He gets a couple tour de force movies, and he tops the list.
Never doubt a small group of concerned citizens can change the world; it's the only thing ever has

My initial reaction is the Jennifer's constant appearances on TV will destroy her mystique. I love to watch her as she is either the most natural person in front of a camera, or the best actress for staging incidents. It seems to me that Joseph is a little more mysterious, but looking at IMDB they both have the same number of credits as themselves.

But you have to hand it to this generation. I was reading that Robert Redford made a decision early in his career to always play heroes. Today, actors are willing to play supporting roles and deeply flawed characters. They are also willing to look dirty, unkempt and beat up if it helps.

What the hell happened with her and Bradley Cooper in that movie Serena? It sold just over 20K tickets. Probably more people saw the photo of her in that dress than saw her in the movie.

What new actors these days will be remembered as classically great in 40 years?

Films these days are so formulaic, it is difficult to find strong material that can be commercially successful. Most of the strongest writing is in small, independent films that are willing to take more risks. Unfortunately, they don't get much play.

My money is still on Eddie Murphy to be recognized as one of the greatest actors in the modern generation. He has demonstrated a huge range, and still has the second half of his career to look forward to. Unfortunately, he got into a run of poorly written, heavy SFX make-up movies, that have handicapped his career. I am hopeful for his future though.

I also have enjoyed following John Cusack's career. After starting off in teen comedies, he moved on to more mature, "voice of a generation" parts. He's dipped back into big budget action with "2012", but seems to be picking parts that appeal to him, rather than working on volume. He's sort of a milder version of Nicholas Cage.

As for the next wave, where does Will Smith fall? He's too old for the teen vampire/killing game crowd, but a generation behind Pacino/DeNiro

I also recommend Jimmi Simpson as another one to watch (Late Show intern bit part, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer, House of Cards). Good stuff from him.

My initial reaction is the Jennifer's constant appearances on TV will destroy her mystique.

Nice X-Men reference! Pun intended?

I think we are in a different era that will never be the same as in the old days. There used to be a group known as "Hollywood Royalty." These were the ones that had multi year contracts attached to one studio. They mostly did the movies they were told to do because of this. Their contracts had stipulations as to how they would appear in public, they had to be dressed well and act like adults. This era lasted to the mid-1960s you could say. Later this group did guest appearances on shows like "The Love Boat" to "Falcon Crest" when their movie careers were dead but they could still act an draw some audience.

That is all gone.

You're waaaay out of date AZD. I'm not referencing the 30's, or even the 70's. I want to know which actors acting right NOW, post 2008 or so, will be recognized as great in 2050. Jennifer Lawrence has already received an Oscar nod for Winter's Bone in 2010, and Bradley Cooper has had four Oscar nominations, which is why I mentioned them before. You really haven't heard of them? Get with the times dude!

What about Angelina Jolie? She anchors her own action flicks Salt, Lara Croft, Wanted, Maleficent, Mr. and Mrs. Smith...

Angelina Jolie is often cited as the only exception to the rule.
These 12 actresses are (in order) the ones whose films have made the most money in North America (not adjusting for inflation). If you did adjust for inflation than Julie Andrews and Carrie Fisher would be near the top for Post WWII.
  1. Cameron Diaz:Shrek 2
  2. Emma Watson:Harry Potter / Deathly Hallows (P2)
  3. Julia Roberts:Ocean's Eleven
  4. Helena Bonham Carter - Harry Potter / Deathly Hallows (P2)
  5. Cate Blanchett -Return of the King
  6. Kathy Bates -Titanic
  7. Sigourney Weaver-Avatar
  8. Sandra Bullock-Gravity
  9. Anne Hathaway-The Dark Knight Rises
  10. Natalie Portman -The Phantom Menace
  11. Sally Field-Forrest Gump
  12. Angelina Jolie-Kung Fu Panda

Even though Angelina Jolie is ranked 12th, many of her films were completely dominated by her. Unlike Cameron Diaz who still made most of her haul from the Shrek movies.

Speaking of getting with the times, the women's money list needs to be updated since July. There are four new names, and I decided to extend the list past Angelina Jolie two more names to include Meryl and Jennifer.

It's easier for the list of women to change as the list of huge films as not as long, but Tom Hanks has not had a mega hit in five years, so eventually he is going to lose the top spot to Morgan Freeman or Samuel L. Jackson.

  1. Cameron Diaz: Shrek 2
  2. Cate Blanchett : Return of the King
  3. Helena Bonham Carter : Harry Potter / Deathly Hallows (P2)
  4. Emma Watson: Harry Potter / Deathly Hallows (P2)
  5. Julia Roberts: Ocean's Eleven
  6. Sigourney Weaver: Avatar
  7. Anne Hathaway:The Dark Knight Rises
  8. Kathy Bates: Titanic
  9. Elizabeth Banks: Catching Fire
  10. Sandra Bullock: Gravity
  11. Scarlett Johansson: The Avengers
  12. Zoe Saldana: Avatar
  13. Michelle Rodriguez: Avatar
  14. Sally Field :Forrest Gump
  15. Natalie Portman: The Phantom Menace
  16. Angelina Jolie: Maleficent
  17. Meryl Streep : Mamma Mia!
  18. Jennifer Lawrence : Catching Fire

For so many years, Julia Roberts was considered the biggest (commercially successful actress in the world). Even as Cameron Diaz's fils made more money, it was only because of the Shrek series. But JR's last big hit film was Ocean's 12 when she was pregnant, and the twins are now ten years old.

Nice X-Men reference! Pun intended?

But that is what I am talking about. Actors that we call "great" from the past worked in a different way. They conducted themselves differently. Because of these differences, modern actors and actresses have a shorter shelf life. And yes, I am not kidding. I do not know them. Even in shows I watch I hardly know the names of the actors/actresses. Same goes for singes. By this point I have more to gain by being out of touch than trying to get back in touch.

The Chefs of today are more like the movie stars of yesteryear. A lot of movie stars would prefer that people knew little about their private lives.

At the same time the idea of being "famous for being famous" coined in the early 1960's as television culture became commonplace, has exploded into a major industry.

Some would prefer to be left alone. Some know the tabloids covering them is good for business. Some are attention whores who just like seeing their name at the checkout.
