I wonder whether a torta restaurant would be a hit in the US. These are a kind of Mexican sandwich on a roll.

Mexican food is, of course, very popular in the USA. However, I have never seen torta's outside of an authentic Mexican restaurant.

Whataburger? You made that up, what a stupid name for a restaurant.

They were all over Texas when I lived there. Good burger. Maybe 6 inches across, flat meat patty lotsa shredded lettuce, like a diner in the 40's (as I imagine it).

Best burger IMO still goes to Fuddruckers because they grill it on a flame, serve it on house-made bun. and buffet table of variety condiments and veggies. Can't possibly get a bad burger when you dress it yourself.

Well you can, but you only have yourself to blame....

I have to try a chik-fil-a when I see one next, as I love fried chicken in general. Though it'd have to compete with the morrocan fried chicken sandwich I just had at a new local place that's just opened, which was a think of beauty...

Yes! My favorite.

Ackee Rice, Salt fish on ice and the Rum is good any time of year, but I'm sad to say cod is over fished and few know what Ackee rice is.

As to Chic Fil A... their preliminary application asks for the dates you have consumed alcohol in the last two years.

I've never seen on outside of Mexico.

IMO for the US market they'd have to change. You'd want to put in things like bacon, for example.

Funny enough, though, tortas are made without chiles of any kind. They are added afterwards by the customer.

Glen Bell created Taco Bell simply because he saw how popular the Mexican restaurant's in his area were. He was selling hot dogs and hamburgers. After only 16 years he had hundreds of restaurants and he sold it to Pepsi.

Can you explain to me why there are as many Taco Bells in Costa Rica and Guatemala as in Canada? I can understand why there aren't any in Mexico as one would probably be blown up.

UNITED STATES 316.1 million
4370 KFC
7863 Pizza Hut
5921 Taco Bell

CANADA 35.2 million
650 KFC
352 Pizza Hut
29 Taco Bell

Hawaii 1.4 million
21 KFC,
45 Pizza Hut,
30 Taco Bell

MEXICO 122.3 million
308 KFC
201 Pizza Hut

COSTA RICA 4.9 million
32 KFC
51 Pizza Hut
29 Taco Bell

GUATEMALA 15.5 million
4 KFC
43 Pizza Hut
33 Taco Bell

CHINA 1357.4 millions
4828 KFC
1572 Pizza Hut
0 Taco Bell

I don't know how much the international expansion happened when it was privately owned.

It looks like Chipotle is becoming the darling of Mexican fast dining in the USA.

It shows how much things have changed
economically in the last 55 years. In 1960
there were no chain fast food restaurants
except in very limited areas. We had none
and it was the 2nd largest city MI.

People couldn't afford to eat out, even at
cheap prices. In 62 we saw the first McD's
and burgers were 10 cents. That was cheap
even to poor people. That there are 10's
of thousands of these places now shows
how far we've come. Eating out is the norm,
we never did it in the 50's. Ever.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.
