In 1950, 1 in 10 Americans lived in NYC. Today, China is trying to do this at 10Xs the scale in Beijing.

Their capital is on the way from being a city to a "region" of sorts. 130 million people in a megaopolis. To put these numbers into perspective, it is as if you had the population of Mexico and L.A. all living in PA.

In the USSR an old joke went that the state was going to solve the goods shortage by linking the entire USSR to Moscow so people could buy goods. China is on her way! So many of these people are just living in bedroom communities and commuting hours, often 3 or 4 each way, to a more industrialized area.

With half of the world population living in that famous "circle" centered in SE Asia, one must wonder if this is how half the world will eventually live?

I think we talked about comparing USA urban/rural growth in the past 110 years. In 1900 USA was still more rural with 46.0 million rural against 30.2 million urban population. Over the last 110 years we have added 219 million urban and 13.5 million rural. Since fertility rates always drop when you move from rural to urban, of the mechanisms that expand urban areas the principal ones are domestic and international immigration, but international immigration was alway the larger of the two.

Year rural urban comments
2010 +0.4 +26.9
2000 -2.6 +35.3 illegal migration
1990 +2.2 +20.0
1980 +5.9 +17.4 birth rate drops
1970 -0.5 +24.4
1960 -0.4 +28.4
1950 -3.0 +22.1
1940 +3.4 +5.5 great deoressuib
1930 +2.3 +14.9
1920 +1.6 +12.2 southern europe
1910 +4.2 +11.8 southern europe
change 13.5 219.0
millions 46.0 30.2

The scale of what China is trying to do in a few years compared to the changes in USA in over a century are staggering. Plus, they are going to urbanize without any foreign immigration.

JUNE 15, 2013 NY TIMES: China is pushing ahead with a sweeping plan to move 250 million rural residents into newly constructed towns and cities over the next dozen years — a transformative event that could set off a new wave of growth or saddle the country with problems for generations to come.

Most governments probably prefer their people to be as urban as possible. Most people they want living in nice, dense neighborhoods with some fold out in the country to farm and do the minimal rural work needed to keep things running. Far easier to control an urban population.

It is easier and cheaper to control and care for chickens when they are all in an industrial size chicken coop rather than free ranging as well. The chinese have always treated their population as a commodity.

Karen Seto speaking for Yale Insights:

.. the scale is just unprecedented, and I think for anybody who wants to study China or do business in China, I would say go to China.

I would say the scale is so unprecedented that, in order to really understand it, you need to go to a smaller city.

I think the third thing that’s critical about China’s urbanization that everyone should know is that it’s not a black and white thing. It’s not that China cities are bad for the environment or that they’re all going to save the environment.

Urbanization is driving economic development in China. There’s no doubt that what will happen in the cities will have a huge impact for economic well-being for the entire country. You probably saw that the Chinese government recently indicated that urbanization is one of their top agenda items in the next ten years, and clearly they see urbanization as the pathway to lift millions of people out of poverty.

The comment that 1 in 10 people lived in NYC in 1950 was referring to metropolitan New York as defined in 1950:
Bronx County, NY; Kings County, NY; New York County, NY; Queens County, NY; Richmond County, NY;
Nassau County, NY;Suffolk County, NY; Rockland County, NY and Westchester County, NY;
Hudson County, NJ; Passaic County, NJ;Bergen County, NJ;Middlesex County, NJ;
Essex County, NJ; Union County, NJ; Morris County, NJ; Somerset County, NJ;

The NYC metro area has been expanded since.
