And here is a 689-square-foot unit in the Superior Ink Condominiums in the Meatpacking district. Smart looking place, but a little sterile. They are asking $1.8 million, a ludicrous $2,612 per square foot with no outdoor space. Currently the most expensive studio apartment in Manhattan.

Compare this studio price with the $2.5 million, 10 bedroom, 9 bath, 9000 square foot 1880 mansion, which is currently the most expensive listing in Detroit.

NYC is the capital of the world, the city that never sleeps... Detroit is the city that won't rebound and won't die.

But if you think about what your home is worth, you see what a similar home is worth and you add a little bit for the extra toilet in the basement, and then you take away a little bit because your acreage is 5% smaller, and then you add a little bit more because you fixed your roof only 3 years ago, and the other house had a 10 year old roof. Finally you add up the bits and pieces and then add $5K just for luck in case the guy is desperate.

Then you look at homes in Vegas, and you wonder why a 15 year old home that sold three times for $4.3-$5m would be worth $22 million in only 6 years.

Heck, in some cities the flippers are getting 100 percent appreciation in six hours.

Marriott is marketing a chain of hotels with 183 sq. ft. rooms. They don't come with closets nor bureaus. It seems like you are sleeping in a shipping container.

Yes, but the public rooms are very nice, and the locations are convenient like the Milan airport. Think of it as a hostel for grown ups.

Still better than the coffin pods allegedly popular in Japan.

For many overnight business trips, I need neither closets nor bureaus. But the lack of a coffee maker would be a deal breaker. I can do without a TV, too, if there is WiFi.

They have been marketing pod rooms for Manhattan that are about half the size of the Marriot container rooms. There is wifi and tiny screen TVs. Once again emphasis is on inviting public rooms.

Room Size is much less important than location. I have been in some microscopic hotel rooms in London because they were downtown.

I'm surprised these would be viable in cities with pretty efficient mass transit in their downtown areas. Why not sleep 15 minutes away in a regular hotel room knowing that you will be able to reliably get back to where you need to be?

What do you guys do at a hotel that you need all this room?

I only get one if I have to, so that typically means long distance vacations. The room is a necessity, not a destination. I basically need somewhere I can lie fully down... and that's about it. Even things like pooping and showering are things I could do communally. One of those Jap tubes would be my go-to, if price went by square footage.

Perhaps it's the tenting and the sailing, but tiny rooms with little to no modern comforts are no deterrent whatsoever to me. Even if the room is solely for a tryst, any one of these would be sufficient.

Seriously, what do you do in a hotel? You got me thinking I'm missing out on some fun =p
