I think this video is one of the coolest things I have ever seen.

Why wouldn't it be easier to use blimps to get tourists into low earth orbit? They could also enjoy the experience for hours as opposed to minutes.

If blimps could go into orbit of any kind, we'd have settled Mars by now.

How about hot air balloons?

We'd have settled Mars by 1900!

I grew up in the 50's watching movies and
TV shows that had landing rockets. This
looks like a bad TV show landing. Who
knew in 1955 that it would take another
60 years before we could land a rocket safely.

I have wondered if super giant blimps could be attached over the tops of ocean cargo or tanker vessels and lift mega tons out of the water to help the ships burn less fuel in ocean crossing?

The blimps could also be solar powered with PV arrays across the tops of the balloon.

Already giant sails have been attached and reduced fuel costs.

If that would work, why not just use the blimps for the cargo itself, and eliminate the ship?

A container ship fully loaded would take
fleet of blimps. Which don't do well in
bad weather.

http://www.popsci.com/military-aviation-space/article/2008-07/return-blimp, that one will haul around twenty tons. Certainly much of the weight that has to be carried is the rotors and crew. I'm thinking electric, [solar powered] or smaller rotors and a larger craft, that is reusable over and over again. It could unhook during threatening weather and just let the ship, be a ship. The dirigible could also be largely autonomous or remote controlled.

Tankers can weigh up to 400k tons. http://www.jobmonkey.com/oilindustry/oil_tankers/ hard to find a place to park a balloon that would carry that much oil.

The sail attachment pic I posted seems to be +ev, I just wondered if making a ship weigh less and raise some of the hull out of the water might be more +ev? Reduce displacement?

Oil tankers burn around 200 gallons of fuel per mile.
