It seems much more expensive than the competition. I suppose it is much more efficient, but with fuel prices low, it will be difficult to sell.

There is a long range version of the airframe, but it seems like a long distance for such a small jet.
3,320 km Washington Dulles Intl, Washington, DC (IAD) to McCarran Intl, Las Vegas, NV (LAS)

Miitsubishi
MRJ 70 passengers: US$34 Million (1,530 km | 2,730 km | 3,380 km)
MRJ 90 passengers: US$42 million

Embraer
E-170: US$28.5 million;
E-195: US$47.0 million

Bombardier
CRJ700: US$24.39 million (2,256 km)
CRJ900: US$38.93 million

I sounds like a bargain compared to a Gulfstream 650.

A G650 has a 25,000 litre fuel tank and can go for very long distances.

G650: $65 million 11–18 passengers (11,112 km |12,960 km)
MRJ: US$34 Million (1,530 km | 2,730 km | 3,380 km)
E-170: US$28.5 million (3,334 km | 3,889 km)
CRJ700: US$24.39 million (2,256 km)

Are the gear down through the whole flight for safety reasons? Why the fighter escort?

I thought Honda was also producing a business jet. Did that project ever get off the ground (literally)?

Honda Jet is on the cusp of deliveries (3 years late). They have completed all functional and reliability tests and are awaiting type certification from the FAA. The type certificate (TC) implies that aircraft manufactured according to the approved design can be issued an Airworthiness Certificate. Then they can be delivered.

But the HondaJet is a true business jet with a price tag under $5 million with a range from Boston to Miami. MRJ is a commercial regional jet although some will no doubt be sold as business jets

HondaJet
Crew: 1 or 2
Passengers: 4-6
Length: 42.6 ft
Wingspan: 39.75 ft
Range: 2,185 km with four occupants
2030 km Logan Intl Arpt, Boston, MA (BOS) to Miami Intl, Miami, FL (MIA)

Mitsubishi Regional Jet
Passengers nominal 70 | 90
Length: 109.6 ft |117.4 ft
Wing span: 95.9 ft
Range 1,530 km - 3,380 km

To measure drag and air resistance, too.

It's a chase plane. From there all flight surfaces are filmed so their performance can be analyzed later. The whole flight is filmed in case something odd or unexpected happens, too.

Yes, but why a fighter? The same could be accomplished with a small business jet at much lower cost.

The large, wraparound cockpit glass provides for better views, especially when flying underneath the jet being tested.

And chances are it's an air force or navy trainer, not an actual fighter.
