Well it looks like Star Wars is going to shatter the record for number of days to earn $500 million at domestic (USA and Canada) box office. It may be half way there by the end of the weekend.

Days to half a billion dollars
17 Jurassic World
23 Marvel's The Avengers
32 Avatar
45 The Dark Knight
98 Titanic

Star Wars is being called the "New ESPN" as it may become the dominant source of income for Disney corporation.

The revenue from this single movie and all the related products could exceed the $6 billion revenue of broadcast television for Disney, and produce an operating income much higher than 14%.

Disney television revenue in $millions --- operating income
42.8% Cable Networks $15,110 --- $6,467
14.1% Broadcasting (ABC) $6,042 --- $854

How do people who believe in vampires, comic book characters, zombies etc. even GET all that money they spend in the first place?

These movies aren't successful because people believe in their fantastical aspects. No one is under the impression that they're documentaries.

The movie boxoffice is traditionally followed (at least for the last 35-40 years) as some kind of barometer on popular culture. Similarly Nielsen ratings on TV shows.

However, the boxoffice revenue is about $11 billion a year in USA and Canada. Disney's broadcast television revenue is (i.e. ABC) is about $6 billion per year.

In contrast youtube makes $9 billion a year and most content is stolen or made by customers. Netflix 2015 total revenues reached $6.78 billion and is growing at over 20% per year. ESPN had revenue of $10.8 billion in 2014. The U.S. gaming revenue was estimated to be $23.5 billion in 2015. Canada has the third largest video game industry in terms of employment numbers following the USA and Japan, with a direct annual economic impact of nearly $3 billion added to Canada's GDP in 2015.

Vampires have been movie subjects since 1922.

IMO Lucas didn't manage to kill the franchise with the Anankin prequels. So SW is still a safe investment. it would take crap worse even than "Attack of the Clones" to have a Star Wars movie bomb.

That said, if it doesn't match the enthusiasm generated by ep VII, it will do just ok compared to the competition.

Oh, and no, many Bothans will not be seen to die in this movie :)

Yes... many people seem confused about this. Many Bothans died to obtain the info about the 2nd Death Star.

Rogue One is about the 1st Death Star.

Maybe we'll see some Bothans in Rogue Two. ;)

Did we ever see a Bothan in the movies?

About that, remember we see Death Star 1 being built at the end of Revenge of the Sith? We know Luke and Leia were born a few days before, and we know the battle station becomes operational at least 20-25 years later. Just why did it take so long to build? And why did they build it with that one fatal flaw? :)

At least the second one took only a few years.
