I totally don't support the idea of supporting street bum culture. I might differ with other liberals, but I don't support street charity, as it just keeps them on the street.

In Vegas, you meet people panhandling all the time. Unless you want to keep getting asked, you learn strategies to avoid them.

AND IF, you have a soft heart, AND you don't want to contribute to these communities you have to use strategies to keep from giving these individuals handouts. And I sometimes give in, I admit it. So, it's best for me to avoid as many as possible by just avoiding giving them the opportunity.

As bad as a sponsored shelter may be in evaluating a lazy con, or a real need, there's definitely no evaluation going on, on the street as long as they stay there.

I guess we could argue about the truly incompetent people who wouldn't know any better even if the handouts stop coming. But I do know every animal from a pigeon to a stray dog or cat won't keep coming back when the handouts stop.

I agree with you. It isn't often I promote Fox News, but here is a great segment by John Stossel about it.

What really bothers me is if you do give something to a beggar, most of the time they don't say "thank you," but badger you really hard for more. For a while I would give them an opportunity for money if they could answer a trivia question, like name the vice president for $5. They always got that one wrong, as well as anything else I consider to something any third-grader should know. A few would take it well and get a kick out of the opportunity but the vast majority would get confrontational and angry about it. So I don't do that any longer.

I will admit that I give change to good street performers. Just saw a street magician in front the Planet Hollywood and was happy to give him a $2 bill. His magic was pretty basic but at least he was trying and offering entertainment.

What I could use is a good line for when I get cornered. For example, I park my car at a convenience store. When I come out I'm followed by a bum to my car or there is one already there waiting to intercept me.

"I use(d) a card". Can't give cash if you don't use it.

I've used a nonsensical response.

"Can you spare a dollar?"

Me: Thanks, but I can't get the washing machine working.

Then just get in your car. Doesn't hurt to mumble a little on top of it, if they can't understand you just helps usually.

In Santa Barbara if they asked for spare
change, I would say 'You mean money
that I wasn't going to use? Sorry,
I don't have any." This always worked, nobody
ever argued with me.

A guy asked me for $5 when I getting in
my van. I said 'no thanks' and he screamed
at me 'You have a van and I have nothing and
you can't give me 5 lousy bucks?' He was
about 25. I told him I have something else
he doesn't have. A job. Get one and you too
can own a van.

I have no use for the homeless, 80% of them
are bums who want to be exactly where they
are.

... also I might mention, even though Vegas seems to allot one panhandler per 7-11 often at all hours of day, it helps to eyeball if anyone is standing around before you even pull in. You can then opt to try another store on another corner if it is not too inconvenient. The worse that happen is there will just be a another one waiting.

I absolutely refuse to live that way.
It's why I left Santa Barbara. The bums
dictate how you live your life.

Here's another one if you happen to be going into a fairly busy casino or maybe a grocery store.

Again you have to eyeball for the potential panhandler, and if there is another person or even better a group of people walking towards the entrance just maneuver in behind them and let them get intercepted first. Same when you leave.

Of course if there is an alternate entrance, it easy just to aim towards that one.
