Not too many toddlers can take Santa. And why would they? A scarey, boogerish-looking fellow after all.

Sometimes I think Santa is 99% for the parents. Boy do new ones want to do the Santa thing *bigtime*, from my observations ... is it even healthy?

I really don't like the whole Santa thing. I think I might write a pastoral letter to my parishioners next year about trying to break the whole Santa Claus craziness. It hurts Christmas and I can't see how it is healthy for young kids.

The Pope started having a Christmas tree in 1982.

Guess, you know who, doesn't show up with presents.

At that, Santa is less of a distraction than Jesus to the base idea behind the festival of Sol Invictus.

I have two sisters with young kids. One of them decided not to lie to their son about Santa and tell it like it is, but to be sure that he was respectful of the fantasy with his friends/classmates so he wasn't ruining it for them. Personally I like that approach...my other sister has 3 little girls and they went the traditional route. The girls are 4, 7, and 10, so pretty soon it'll be over for all of them.

My family "did" the Santa Claus thing, leaving out milk & cookies, presents from "Santa" under the tree etc. The thing is I don't even remember when I figured it out, so clearly I wasn't crushed. We were strongly religious too, but they didn't have a problem integrating the "true" meaning of Christmas with the Santa myth.

When I was a kid an uncle dressed as Santa and visited my sister (my borther and I knew by then) in a sort of pre-Christmas check-in.

Best part--the dog almost bit him!

Imagine, no matter how good you would be from then on in you have to wonder if he will show up Christmas Eve.
