In 2008 and 2009 a historical Chinese film about a 3rd century battle dominated the Chinese Boxoffice making $47 million (and $38 million for the sequel)

Last year China's boxoffice was led by Furious 7 ($391 million) and Monster Hunt ($382 million). Furious 7 is the latest in the short list of American films that made more money in China than in USA and Canada. You would be hard pressed to find someone in Northern America who has even heard of the family film "Monster Hunt".

Now in 2016 a fantasy and environmental activist film about Mermaids and evil land developers has made over a half a billion dollars in China ($527 million) and $3.2 million in Northern America . Only six films in history have made over $527 million in USA and Canada.

Even though almost no one has seen Mermaids in the USA, reviewers thought it was well put together, but without a lot of innovation. Evil developers destroying the environment for mermaids.

A downloaded version on youtube is of poor quality, but it is almost impossible for me to watch. It's difficult to

Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi? was a mega hit in Japan. While the pacing is very different than a Western movie, it is still interesting to watch.

The top 9 films in the USA are comic books, computer graphic films, animation. You have to get to #10 to find buddy comedy films and horror flicks.
  1. Captain America: Civil War
  2. Finding Dory
  3. Deadpool
  4. The Jungle Book (2016)
  5. Zootopia
  6. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
  7. X-Men: Apocalypse
  8. Kung Fu Panda 3
  9. The Angry Birds Movie
  10. Central Intelligence
  11. The Conjuring 2
  12. Ride Along 2

The top 20 films include one thriller and one "faith based Christian" movie

But the attraction of making a film which could earn half a billion dollars in China is going to radically reshape the hit movie landscape in a few years.
