I'm trying to buy a couple domains that are evidently being squatted on by mysterious owners. One is registered in Germany and the other in Russia.

I am looking to see if anyone on the forum is interested in paying work trying to reach the owners of these sites. I think there are tricks besides doing a WhoIs search, which has only led to dead ends. This is paying work. The candidate should ideally have some experience in this kind of research.

Thank you.

If you can't find someone here, GoDaddy offers this service.

If they're interested in selling wouldn't they be easy to find? Question two and I've been thinking about this for a while, Do domain names matter? I don't think most people type domains to go to websites any more.

Have you secured wizardofvegas.com.mx; wizardofvegas.mx; wizardofodds.com.mx and wizardofodds.mx?

I'd go cyber-squatting, but the days of payments of real money for domain names are long gone...

No. I still think a "dot com" is the gold standard.

Recently a supplier changed their domain from supplier.com.mx to supplier.mx, and they're getting tons of calls from irate customers because the emails they send them bounce.

Technically the top level domain for Mexico is just ".mx". The ".com" does not denote a country or region (there is a ".us"), neither do ".org" or ".edu". But the number of Mexico-based websites, or directed to Mexico, without a ".com.mx" ending is tiny. Hell, even government uses ".gob.mx" (NOT ".gov").

Anyway, I'm off to buy some domain names... :)

(I'm really not).

Be sure to do something in 'Twitterspace' also. There is a WizardofOdds in Australia but I don't think its you despite the wizard cap that is depicted.
Some squatters are Russian Mafia types who buy up expiring names and then host pornography, telling the former domain owners if you don't like, pay through the nose.

I thought I found one of the domains owners I'm searching for. He asked for 1,000 Euros for it, which I though was reasonable and agreed. I then said I intended to use Escrow.com to broker the deal and asked if he would split the 35 Euro cost. Never heard a peep back from him after that. I speculate he was hoping I would pay the 1,000 Euros and then simply not transfer the domain or he wasn't the legitimate owner in the first place.
