I read that half the people examined who decided to stare at the eclipse without eye protection in 1999, 50% had some degree of eye damage.

Staring at the full sun causes physical pain and is hard to do, but the eclipse doesn't cause any pain.

That's exactly the problem.

Worse yet, compared to totality, the gradual occultation of the Sun by the Moon is literally not worth seeing.

Here in Mex City we'll get a maximum 38% coverage of the Sun. That's not worth even glancing up.

The next one after today is in April 2024.

Looks like I'm in the path of totality for that one, so I'll wait.

Going on right now, not as dark as I would have thought.

My area looked like it does before a big afternoon rainstorm. Dark, but like before a big thunderstorm.

Hah, I was more right that I thought, it's now raining outside.

It's a coincidence that the Moon is so near the apparent size of the Sun that total eclipses take place ("total eclipse" defined as covering every bit of the Sun but it's luminous atmosphere, also known as the Corona).

Now, if intelligent life developed in some other planet where total eclipses were just not possible, would the inhabitants develop a technology to make them?

Before you answer, consider we have, in a way, already done so.

Inside the house it looked like that, outside was the biggest letdown since Y2K.
