It involves a lot of meditation under strict time guidelines. The master gives you a koen, a question, that has no real answer and cannot be arrived at logically. The most famous koen is, what is the sound of one hand clapping. You sit and think about this for a few hours and give your answer to the master. He must have your answer, 'I don't know' won't work. He'll hear your answer, shake his head, and the next day you think on it again. Some people have the same question for years. The master isn't looking for the 'correct' answer, there is none. He's looking for transcendence from the student, an indication he's seeing a hint of who he really is. One day the master will nod his head, and immediately give you another koen. The point is, the koen's teach your brain to think about the world around you in a different way. If you do it long enough, you'll get to the point where you clearly see who you are in this life and get a glimpse of your Buddha-nature. The more you do it, the more you see of your inner self's connection to the universe. You could eventually become a master. Wuman sat for 6 years in the 11th century contemplating just a single koen. He complied a book of koen's that's still used today, called The Gateless Gate. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |
