People are pouring out of Reykjavik to see the eruption. JFK to Keflavik is 2253 nautical miles for people who want to see for themselves. In comparison JFK to SFO is 2247 nautical miles. From March 26, 2021, all travelers - regardless of origin - are welcome to visit Iceland if they can show either: certificate of full vaccination against COVID.

Iceland has only 29 deaths from COVID, or roughly 5% of the death rate of the US.

I think this is not the 'usual' volcano that erupts there

I am getting the impression that vulcanism is on the increase in the world these days, but it could easily be that I am getting that impression because of youtube. I was interested in Mt. Etna erupting, went to youtube for that. Now youtube knows my interest and every thing going on with volcanoes, I get something from youtube to watch

Be careful. You are being radicalized by the Google machine.

I too was wondering if this was the same volcano that was purging a few years ago and affected travel between U.S. and Europe.

That will just arouse the suspicion of the people in the black helicopters overhead.
You believe in an invisible god, and dismiss people who say they are trans? Really?

This volcano is about 80 miles from the one ten years ago that stopped all the flights. It has not erupted in 6000 years, and no volcano in the region has erupted for 900 years. It is much closer to the city than the one in 2010.

Since first erupting Jan. 3, 1983, Puu Oo was continuously active over its 35-year history, except for more than 100 brief pauses lasting from a few hours to two months. The end came suddenly with a catastrophic collapse in April that left the vent and surrounding flow fields devoid of lava through the rest of 2018.

I drove up Mt. Etna. It is erupting most days.

Many volcanoes are erupting for years at a time.
