The new Toyota Venza has a digital rear view "mirror" based on a camera. There is an option to switch to a normal mirror if the camera should be covered by dirt.

My only concern would be that if something happens to the camera, possibly something serious is happening that is endangering your safety. Now you have one more thing to do right at that moment.

What do you think?

How do you keep an eye on kids in the back with the camera?

That is probably for the best. A lot of accidents due to rear view mirror misuse are because the driver repositioned it for a reasons not related to driving (a lot of people don't take their rear view mirror positioning until its too late).

I take it you don't have kids Gandler. I would love to see a source for statement "A lot of accidents due to rear view mirror misuse".

I have zero kids and I plan on keeping it that way as long as possible.

Also, a digital rearview mirror prevents other distractions like doing make up, your hair, obsessing over your teeth while driving etc....

Your links are lawyers sites looking for clients no stats. I will give you the people that are using the rear view mirror to put on makeup, do their hair etc. are a danger. Not as dangerous as cellphone use but certainly not safe.

Doug Demuro has shown a few cars with this feature. What I like is the mirror is still there when the camera breaks or gets muddy. I think depth perception will take a few miles to get used to.

One of my vehicles has a rearview mirror that automatically switches correctly to the right night-time view somehow when it turns dark, I don't have to touch it. In the day it goes back to correct for day.

Weirdly, it has a little light that you would think means 'auto' is on or off. I can turn this light on and off, but it seems to make no difference. I have gotten out the manual and can't find much information and no instructions for turning it on and off and what is supposed to happen when I do. Nor any detail about exactly how it works.

I guess this post is hijacking the thread but I have been wanting to mention this for some time now.

I would want to see on it the distance projected to the object behind you. Maybe not all the time but definitely if something is close.
