The standard Golf was introduced by Volkswagon to the US towards the end of 1974, and VW has sold nearly 2.5 million of the things since. The Mk7, which was technically still in production until last week, was also named North American Car of the Year when it first arrived in 2015.

Although VW will still sell the Golf GTI (Grand Touring Injection) which is a $5500 over the standard model (Starting MSRP $23,195 to $28,695) the standard Golf is the last low cost COMPACT car sold by Volkswagon.

VW's sole remaining sedan for under $20K is the Jetta with a starting MSRP $18,995. Unless they do the same thing with that model as the Jetta GLI has a starting MSRP $26,345,

The Beetle which began production in 1938 ended production in Mexico in July 2019. So this is really the end of the affordable people's car.
