Talk about a guy who had some Show Business stories, that was Tony Bennett. He was in the business since the early fifties and he knew everybody and he knew all the gossip and he knew where all the bodies were buried. He was around in those days when if you didn't kiss the mafia's ass you didn't work because they owned every nightclub in the United States, every nightclub worth working for. They even controled Frank Sinatra which wasn't easy. If the mob said jump Frank said how high. Art Linkletter had great stories from that era, so did Jerry Lewis. Dean Martin probably did too but he didn't talk about it because he was one of them in the old days. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Our daughter attended a terrace party, two or so years ago where he and his wife were also guests. The host hired a singer who must have been surprised to find she was singing for Tony Bennet. He was also a reasonably good painter. |

DoubleGold Member since: Jan 26, 2023 Threads: 30 Posts: 2506 | A little story: Johnny Lujack and my uncle were recruited by Notre Dame before the war, I think the same year. Frank Leahy thought my uncle needed to gain a little weight so he offered my uncle a full ride after getting him a job in Chicago for a year. My uncle turned the offer down and immediately signed for a full ride with Harry Stuhldreher. There my uncle gained weight fast and was in the same backfield as Crazy Legs Hirsch. My uncle was a running back. The Pearl Harbor bombing occurred so they postponed the rest of the season and possibly the next or so. I don't remember the exact timing of what I was told. You can see the gap in Johnny Lujack's playing record while he was in college. So after the war, they played college football again. Most of the players entered the war. My uncle was in the Pacific region. In 1943, Notre Dame beat my uncle's team 50-0 but they tied in 1942. |
