August 6th, 2013. If you went back in time to the late 60s, say, and told business leaders of the time that some of the biggest companies of the early XXI century would sport names like Amazon, Google, Yahoo!, Apple, and that there would be operating systems called Mountain Lion and Jelly Bean, you'd be thrown into a loony bin.

I have a hard time not believing moving objects might be skipping through space like an animated cartoon.

August 7th, 2013. It's plain for anyone with even a cursory knowledge of hsitory to see that Western culture is rooted in Greco-Roman practices, customs, traditions, beliefs, outlooks and philosophies, with some outside, eastern influences. Why, then, is Western cutlure referred to as being Judeo-Christian in nature?

The dominant culture whether by right or might, declares what is important in history. I guess. I'm sure even ancient cultures did their part to minimize the contribution of outliers, otherwise known as "the losers" in the war of cultures.

Oh, sure. The Romans ahd a practice of dammning the memory of notable people who were not liked. Like, say, Caligula, Mark Anthony, etc. Their names would be striken from public monuments and other such actions were taken.

Oh, look at that: Roman :)

More seriously, Rome in its early days consciously imitated the Greek city-states (probably those in Magna Graecia in southern Italy). Christianity spread independently throughout the ancient world, yes. But it was then taken over by Rome shortly after Constantine the (arguably) Great adopted it as the state religion. And that's how it spread throughput Europe and much of the rest of the world hence. hell, the two main branches were the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. One was based in Rome, the other in constantinople, the very same capitals of the Western and eastern Roman empires!

So rather than Christianity changing the culture, the existent Greco-Roman culture changed Christianity.

Of course, it would be very hard for today's troglodytes to justify oppressive measures by citing the 12 Tables of Roman Law (more so since they were lost). And the rest of Roman jurisprudence, as compiled at first under the emperor Justinian, formed the basis of every legal code in the West for, oh, the last 1500 years or so.

Judeo probably comes from Jews realizing its better to name the culture Judeo than spend money fighting wars and pogroms.
Christian probably comes from the usual historical nonsense of seizing on the virtually irrelevant as if it were some major cause. Many of the founding fathers in this country were Christians but most were very non-religious at all and did not favor a public role for religion. Most disputes in history seem settled around economics rather than religion.

Oops! I slipped.

Justinian was by no means the first to order a compilation of Roman law. But the Corpus Juris Civilis compiled in his reign at his direction, is one of the foundations of Western law.

August 12th 2013. If you went back in time to the 1960s and told a gathering of techies that the big advance in 2013 was "remote computing and storage from centralized locations to users distributed all over the world," they'd justifiably wonder whether there's been any progress in the intervening half century.

:P
