I'm referring to the movie Napoleon Dynamite. This is one of those few movies I could watch over and over again, and never get tired of it. What is amazing is it was done on a shoestring budget too. It's funny that movies that were made in the 1930's and 1940's are easily watched over and over, but now that we have the technology to easily watch a movie unlimited times, most of them are unwatchable after first viewing. |

I remember when audiences stood and cheered an empty screen at the end of a movie such as Singin' in the Rain. And audiences applauded at the Thalia on the Upper West Side. |

Oh, but there are plenty of old movies still around! Seriously, there are many great old movies which are very much worth watching. If you have a chance, find "Citizen Kane" with commentary by the late Roger Ebert. That film is a masterpiece of the cinematographer's art, and Ebert's commentary points out just how much was involved in shooting the movie. And there's the great acting, witty dialogue and somewhat engaging story. Then there are others like Casablanca, Macario, All's Quiet on the Western Front, Noi Vivi, The Third Man, The Fountainhead, Un Día Con El Diablo, Metropolis and many more. Nothin' else matters. Casablanca? Became a very well marketed film. It was probably a good one but it took off only when it was marketed as a "hit". All Quiet on the Western Front.... never saw anything much happening in it. |
