Of the first 7 names with the largest fortune in the given state, I would call 6 of them celebrity billionaires. Their huge wealth means that their names are constantly in the media. The exception is Kansas, where despite a vast wealth, he is not as common a household name.

Without cheating, can you guess the names of the top 7 ? Hint (they are all men). I put in the name of the richest man in Virginia. If you lived in VA you would hear his name frequently, and most people know about Mars candy, but Forrest Mars is rarely photographed and unlike most billionaires he is very reclusive .

1. Washington: ---- ----- is worth $64.5 billion
2. Nebraska: ------ ------- is worth $49.6 billion
3. California: -------- ------- is worth $41.1 billion
4. Arkansas: ----- ------ is worth $33.6 billion
5. Kansas: ----- ---- is worth $32.1 billion
6. New York: ------- --------- is worth $24.8 billion
7. Nevada: ------- ------- is worth $20.2 billion
8. Virginia: Forrest Mars, Jr. is worth $17 billion

The 6 women are below
11. Massachusetts: Abigail Johnson is worth $11.9 billion President, Fidelity Financial Services
12. Georgia: Anne Cox Chambers is worth $11.2 billion Member of Cox Enterprises' board of directors
27. Minnesota: Pauline Keinath is worth $3.7 billion Part-owner of Cargill Inc. and great-granddaughter of founder W. W. Cargil
28. Indiana: Gayle Cook is worth $3.4 billion Member of board of directors of medical device firm Cook Group
32. South Carolina: Anita Zucker is worth $2.2 billion Chairwoman and CEO of chemical manufacturer InterTech Group
36. Alabama: Marguerite Harbert is worth $1.4 billion Widow of the late construction and energy mogul, John Murdoch Harbert III

I'm pretty sure I know #1.
Bill Gates

I have two candidates for #2 (I don't know where either lives; I am guessing based on the number of letters in the clue).
Thomas Pickens (T. Boone Pickens) or Warren Buffett

I have no clue about 3 through 7.
I'm serious, I have no clue!

I seem to recall that a chunk of the Walmart fortune was passed on to at least one daughter. Didn't she make this list?

The rules of the game are the wealthiest person in each state, not the wealthiest people in the country overall. With family fortunes often many family members live in the same state. But Sam Walton's vast fortune went partly to his wife, and then he did have one daughter. Also his niece inherited a much smaller chunk, but still enough to make her one of the world's billionaires.

The wealthiest person in Wyoming would not normally make the typical list. In fact there are 9 states without a resident billionaire.

rdw4potus got all of his answers correct, except for the one he didn't know. In two cases he knew the family, but not which individual in the family with the most money.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are widely known as the two wealthiest men in America. WB is often called the "Wizard of -----" or the "Oracle of -----" so he should be easy. I'm surprised more people don't know the wealthiest man in New York.

For his connection to gambling and politics, the wealthiest man in Nevada should be relatively easy.

Les Wexner is a man!

My mother went to high school with him. Bexley High School, Columbus, Ohio.

Edit: Oops, sorry, MakingBook. I guess we are four degrees separated then :)

My guess for New York:

Michael Bloomberg

I would say the Kansas clan are celebrity billionaires. They are very well known for the their political and philanthropic activities.

The Forbes 400 Richest People in America disagrees with the wealth-x list as to where some of these people live. Of course, when you are a multi-billionaire, owning several homes is relatively easy.

David Koch, according to Forbes, lives in NY, NY which makes him the richest man in NY. The other publication says it is His Honor, Michael Bloomberg.

There is also some disagreement about the home of the Waltons. According to Forbes, only 2 of the 4 live in Arkansas, while the other 2 live in Texas and Wyoming.

  1. Bill Gates $66 B 57 Medina, Washington Microsoft
  2. Warren Buffett $46 B 82 Omaha, Nebraska Berkshire Hathaway
  3. Larry Ellison $41 B 68 Woodside, California Oracle
  4. Charles Koch $31 B 76 Wichita, Kansas diversified
  5. David Koch $31 B 72 New York, New York diversified
  6. Christy Walton & family $27.9 B 57 Jackson, Wyoming Wal-Mart
  7. Jim Walton $26.8 B 64 Bentonville, Arkansas Wal-Mart
  8. Alice Walton $26.3 B 63 Fort Worth, Texas Wal-Mart
  9. S. Robson Walton $26.1 B 68 Bentonville, Arkansas Wal-Mart
  10. Michael Bloomberg $25 B 70 New York, New York Bloomberg LP
  11. Jeff Bezos $23.2 B 48 Seattle, Washington Amazon.com
  12. Sheldon Adelson $20.5 B 79 Las Vegas, Nevada casinos
  13. Sergey Brin $20.3 B 39 Los Altos, California Google
  14. Larry Page $20.3 B 39 Palo Alto, California Google
  15. George Soros $19 B 82 Katonah, New York hedge funds
  16. Forrest Mars, Jr. $17 B 81 Big Horn, Wyoming candy
  17. Jacqueline Mars $17 B 73 The Plains, Virginia candy
  18. John Mars $17 B 76 Jackson, Wyoming candy
  19. Steve Ballmer $15.9 B 56 Hunts Point, Washington Microsoft
  20. Paul Allen $15 B 59 Mercer Island, Washington Microsoft, investments
