Pit Bosses Again

Was at the casino again today at shift change.
I wanted to ask a question and went to the
pit and was directed to the pit manager. Just
then the PM for the next shift came up so I
had the attention of TWO PM's at once.

I asked if they were ever called pit bosses anymore.
They both said never. In fact 'that is an old term
and we discourage the use of it in this casino."
The word 'boss' can have negative connotations,
apparently. It's close to 'mob boss', for one thing.
And in prisons guards were always referred to as
boss. It was probably the mob that came up
with pit boss in the first place, when I think about
it.

So for me it's official. Not only is every suit NOT a
pit boss, there aren't any pit bosses at all anymore.

Pit Manager eh?

This is why I always thought it was just about the coolest job title out there. PC takes the fun out of one more thing.

Back in the 70's there was a pit boss Downtown
who was in his 50's and wore a black silk suit
with a carnation in the lapel every day. You don't
see that kind of flair anymore. He looked like
his job title.
