So what, some of you are saying. Mickey Rooney was the
last living star of the silent film era. He was a movie star
before movies even had sound.

For years in the late 30's he was Hollywood's biggest
money maker. He could do anything, sing, dance, act.
I grew up in the 50's watching his movies on TV. Him
and a young Judy Garland were amazing together.

But what has always held my admiration is, he married
a gorgeous Eva Gardner when she was 22 years old.
He couldn't keep her on the ranch, and neither could
Frank Sinatra. Even Hemingway had a thing for Eva.
I don't know what she had, but she had enough to
go around..

Mickey Rooney had turned age 7 just before the Jazz Singer was released, so he was a child star. Olivia de Havilland and Eli Wallach were both age 11, but Olivia did not start making movies until she was nearly 19 and Eli until his 30's.

These screen stars are older than Mickey Rooney
01 Carla Laemmle (10/20/09) credits for Mansion of Blood still filming
02 Luise Rainer (1/12/10)
03 Mártha Eggerth (4/22/12)
04 Eli Wallach (12/7/1915)
05 Olivia de Havilland (7/1/1916)
06 Kirk Douglas (12/9/1916)
07 Zsa Zsa Gabor (2/6/17)
08 Danielle Darrieux (5/1/17)
09 Movita (12/4/17)
10 Baby Peggy (10/26/18)
11 Michèle Morgan (2/29/20)
12 Setsuko Hara (6/17/20)
13 Maureen O'Hara (8/17/20)

Mickey was a bonefied silent film star, a well
known name, and none of those on the list
were.

And later he married younger women and during some tv appearance about it he denied having "spats" and proudly proclaimed that they had fights!

Mickey was the most talented person in show biz
until he was about 30. He could do everything
very well. Sing, dance, do serious and comic acting,
and make it all look effortless. He had enough
energy for 5 people. Then things changed around
1950 and his style went out of fashion. Watch some
of the films he made with Judy Garland, he's
mesmerizing.
