Programmers who can do the job they need done need some latitude on their past, assuming they're subjected to hiring and future drug rules, what they did in the past doesn't matter. And, FWIW, lots of people who smoked pot in their previous life (and admitted it on the application) were hired into the Federal government, especially in the 70's and 80's. It's not like there's no precedent on this.


The issue as I read it is not their past, it is their present. To hire a thief to catch them is an old thing, but you don't hire a guy who is still stealing as he will soon steal from you. The problem with current pot smokers is reduced judgment and bad decision making. Even Gus on "Breaking Bad" made this point, and in the end it cost Gus his empire.
