Frank Abignale, the Catch Me If You Can Guy, says debit cards are very bad and he's never had one.

The Swedish Riksbank survey for the year 2011 concludes the following.

% GDP in cash - currency in circulation per person in USD
Sweden 2.68% $1,527
USA 7.14% $3,452
United Kingdom 3.69% $1,448

debit cards - credit cards (transactions per year)
Sweden 169-32
USA 157-78
United Kingdom 123-31

Direct transactions (no card involved) credit-debit
Sweden 87- 30
USA 25-38
UK 58-5
These could involve a computer or a kiosk

Paper checks per year
Sweden 0
USA 68
UK 16

So in all three countries debit cards are fairly dominant. Sweden has actively reduced cash in the last two years since this survey was done, and is certainly lower than UK by today.

I just wrote my first check in two years for $600 to a place that didn't take credit/debit cards. The address on that check is 4 addresses ago. I had to run home to find the checkbook. I was flabbergasted. In 2014. She apologized.
