Last week I was in San Francisco and saw some durians at a grocery store in China Town. Here is a picture of me holding one, which was somewhat painful.

In my research on durians I came across this photo.

This is the kind of thing that really gets under my skin. The fines are clearly listed for smoking, eating, drinking, and flammable goods. Very stiff fines, but I also hear Singapore is a very clean place. This may explain why.

What bothers me is the inconsistency of the sign. The authorities clearly state the penalty for the other three rule violations, but for durians is it just blank. I NEED to know what the fine is. I guarantee you that whenever I get to Singapore (and that is high on my list) I'll bother the entire country with this question.

However, if any of my Singapore fans already know, please enlighten all of us.

Singapore is where they carry out public whipping.

I'm thinkin' that's the penalty.

Possibly with durians.

Typical fine is $500. This explains why:

What are these things for?

As a guess I think they just don't want them carried open because of the close quarters people are in and the probability of them stabbing another passneger. Similar to how on busses/trolleys here where there is a sign "No Radio W/O Headphones." They won't fine you for such a radio, but they may simply eject you. That is my guess.

Does anyone else notice that if you smoke you get 2 fines? One for the smoking and one for the lighter or matches?

It's because of their smell. I've only encountered durians one time, but once was enough for me. They supposedly taste good, but I don't know how anyone can eat something that smells so bad.

I've seen them on Food Network, they smell
like dirty socks, BO, and cat piss all rolled into
one.

1) Obsess much?

2) Are you sure the sign is legitimate and not a joke or hoax?

3) Is anything less than the death penalty appropriate for such an offense?

4) ;)

Tempts me to carry one where I don't want people crowding around me.

Ever seen someone thrown out of a casino game for being too smelly? Maybe Face has.

Constantly. And many times what smells is left behind upon their departure.

And you thought the black fingers from the slot's buttons were bad ;)
