If Southwest airline began offering you a 20% discount to take a standing seat on flights of 700 miles (2 hours) or less would you take it? You might have to meet weight requirements (guess 200 lbs for men, and 150 lbs for women).

In 2013, Southwest's average passenger airfare was $154.72 one way, so for a practical matter that would be a $30 discount.

The airline would increase revenue per row from 3*$154.72 = $464.16 to 4*80%*$154.72 = $495.10

Imagine Southwest's smallest jet with 20*6+2=122 seats converted to 20*7+2=142 seats by intermixing a saddle seats on every other row.

I would guess no, but probably yes if it was the only flight available. After I got off, it would ideally be the last time assuming it wouldn't be pleasant. At 200 pounds I would be too heavy though.

I hardly LUV the idea of taking my first Southworst flight in the first place. Airline travel is bad enough as it is, I'd rather just ship myself UPS.

IOW, "no."

Airline service has gone way down over the past 20 years. Now they're putting restrictions on luggage or charging fees for it. If they downgrade the accomodations, that will be so near the end as makes no difference.

Come on, aren't coach airline seats unconfrotable enough as they are? Do we need less to save a few bucks?

IMO airline fares are as low as they can be in most routes in most places. If airlines want to make more money, they should offer additional services either a la carte (WiFi, meals (good grief!), pillows, PPV on seat backs, etc), rather than further downgrade the flight experience and cramming ever more poeple into smaller planes.

Picture this: first class, business class, coah and cattle.

No thanks.

Hell no. I'd prefer to see the opposite option where I pay more to get more space. In fact, I always take advantage of the "deluxe coach" or whatever they call it, on Jet Blue. For an extra $15 you get a few extra inches of leg space and get to board first.

On a somewhat related topic, I don't understand how most passengers can stay seated on a long international flight the entire time, except maybe one or two trips to the bathroom. I frequently have to walk up and down the aisles to keep my blood circulating. When I start to get the stink eye from annoyed passengers in the aisle seats I'll pace back and forth in the galley for a while, to the annoyance of the flight attendants reading magazines there.

The last long flight I took was London to Houston in 1985. People moved about a great deal during the 10+ hours of flight. Granted it was a bit unsusual as the plane was only about 1/3 full, so people even used up a whole row section to lie down for sleep. And of course it was years ago, before the big clampdown on everything.

BTW, back in the late 80s and early 90s, when Airbus was still planning the A-380 and Boeing said they would have a super-jumbo of their own (they never did), the arilines were talking about putting in all sort of nice things inside these huge jets, other than tiny seats that is. There was talk of lounges, mini-gyms, mini-movie theaters.

Instead now we're close to airlines charging for air, and passengers cramped in a tortous half-standing position.

The airline industry is supposed to grow 80%
in the next 20 years. That's almost twice as
many passengers as now, but they won't have
twice as many planes. Figure it out.

Here's an idea for giving more room while boarding.

An original idea for sharing armrest.

Putting the middle sea backwards so you have more side room.
