I just learned that the flapper on my toilet tanks have an adjustment for how much water is used on the flush. Is this something new in the last 20 years or am I just an idiot?

The flapper, or the float?

Not an idiot, but unless you had need to know how a toilet flushes, you wouldn't' necessarily need to know how a toilet flushes.

The flapper. I have changed the guts on toilets at least ten times and I knew you could adjust the float to control the amount of water in the tank. I didn't realize you could adjust the flapper to time how long it stays up before closing. Apparently it is for those who are water conscience. I am guessing this is something relatively new, the flapper has a dial on it labelled from 1 to 10. In my case the flapper wouldn't stay open unless you held the toilet handle down until the flush was completed. I lived with that for about a month and finally decided that I need to know why. After playing with it for about an hour and failing, I went to Google and found out about the dial on the flapper. It was set on 2 by default and I changed it to 10 and the flapper stayed open long enough for a complete flush.

I hope the next time I need a flapper I don't have to buy a 'smartflapper' or whatever they call it

the next generation will be connected to the internet, no? ha ha

I’m generally incompetent at fixing things. I needed electric work and we have a friend of the family who is an electrician and he came over and did a bunch of work for me. I think he gave me a ‘friend’s’ price but I can’t be 100% sure. I was very happy with the results. That’s a few years ago. Last week I needed some work, he came over and it was really a very minor fix. I of course thanked him and paid him. The first time years ago he said he’s always willing to help friend/family but didn’t need the extra work.
But this time he said he was looking for more work…. new baby…. wife not working. I remarked how much ‘handyman’ (non electrical)work I need…. He hands me a card…. He and a friend formed a company where he does the electrical and the friend does the traditional handyman stuff!

I can’t describe the feeling of elation at now having a ‘handyman’! That I can trust.

If I need new guts for my toilet I now know I’ll call!

Rule#1 Use a toilet plunger for the toilet and a sink plunger for the sink. They are different designs.
You believe in an invisible god, and dismiss people who say they are trans? Really?

I will do it for free if you pay for the travel and lodging. To save you a few bucks I would even agree to fly coach.

I have to go to the home center today on an unrelated matter. I will look for Dial-O-Flapper in the plumbing section!
