I don't know that much about the union laws in the UK, except I have heard that Margaret Thatcher did a lot to get rid of public employees that were habitually striking. You might recall the thread Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead wherein the English public made a concerted effort to purchase that song so that on the date of Margaret Thatcher's funeral procession, the weekly BBC music program would be forced to play it. That shows how hated she was by coal miners and steel workers who felt she busted the unions plunging the north into poverty while making London property developers and City men wealthy. European and Japanese factories were new thanks to the Marshall Plan, but the UK had never received any such funds to rebuild and could not support high priced union labor and inefficient industries. Many union elections are intentionally scheduled for inconvenient times so that true membership feelings are not represented but union leaders get the desired tally. |

The Union laws needed weakening. She was successful, but the miners strike was brutal, and I think she went too far. Remember, the ability to remove labour is the other side of the coin to the ability to raise prices. Both can happen in oligarchy/monopoly situations. This is why I hate closed shop unions, as they do nothing to justify their existence to the workers. It is said that your life flashes before your eyes just before you die.... it's called Life |
