I was thinking of Donald Trump's credentials to be POTUS in term of precedent.

Herbert Hoover was 3rd United States Secretary of Commerce (March 5, 1921 – August 21, 1928) which is not an elected office. He is the only POTUS in history to never have been elected to a national office or have significant military service.

I surprised myself to find 12 President's with prior military service. I could never have named all of them. Can you?

Can you name these three Presidents? Fairly easy.

1 George Washington Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army
12 Zachary Taylor (Army Major General) Mexican-American War"Old Rough and Ready"
18 Ulysses Grant General of the Army civil war
34 Dwight Eisenhower General of the Army in WWII

Can you name these eight Presidents? Not easy at all.

7 Andrew Jackson (Major General) Age 13 in War of Independence & First Seminole War in Florida US Senator from Tenn. March 4, 1823 – October 14, 1825
9 William Harrison - Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811, Battle of the Thames in 1813. War of 1812 US Senator from Ohio March 4, 1825 – May 20, 1828
17 Andrew Johnson (Military Governor of Tennessee) Civil War 15th Governor of Tennessee October 17, 1853 – November 3, 1857
20 James Garfield Civil War United States Senator-elect from Ohio (Jan 1880 – Mar 1881) U.S. Representatives March 4, 1863 – November 8, 1880
25 William McKinley Spanish–American War Congressman and then Governor of Ohio
26 Theodore Roosevelt Spanish–American War in Cuba and Puerto Rico, Governor of NY state, Vice President
33 Harry Truman WWI US Senator from Missouri (Jan 3, 1935 – Jan 17, 1945)
39 Jimmy Carter (Navy Lieutenant) Governor of Georgia

Shouldn't Bush Sr be on the 2nd list?
He was elected Vice President. The
first list was easy.

3 of the 4 were obvious
My 4th which I thought was more obvious then your 4th is due to
The 1st thing that came to my head was
"Tippecanoe and Tyler too", to me is one of the most famous Presidential election slogans ever and it involves a battle :-)

The group of four on my list were Presidents were elected solely on their military background.

Although William Harrison became famou for the Battle of Tippecanoe, he was first a elected a US Senator from Ohio (March 4, 1825 – May 20, 1828).

Teddy Roosevelt was a war hero as well, but he was elected Governor of New York for which he served 2 years, and he was elected Vice President, a position he held for only 28 weeks.

I suppose I didn't define the list correctly. They are list of soldiers who became POTUS. There actually is a list of sailors and pilots as well.

35 John F. Kennedy Sailor (Navy Lieutenant)
37 Richard Nixon Sailor (Navy Lieutenant Commander)
38 Gerald Ford Sailor (Navy Lieutenant Commander)
39 Jimmy Carter Sailor (Navy Lieutenant)
41 George H. W. Bush Pilot (Navy Lieutenant, Junior Grade)
43 George W. Bush Pilot (Texas Air National Guard)

Reading the topic list I was reminded of the political media specialist who defeated a woman for governorship based on her inability to use a tank as head of the state's national guard. Ridiculous argument but the voters bought it.

Truman was a front man for the Prendergast mob ... Kennedy the son of a smuggler who had stabbed in the back many of those who tried to stem the fall of shares in 1929, Kennedy got his boat rammed , a LT jg is hardly an exalted rank ... military service hardly counts for anything these days.

He has any?

I really cannot think of any candidate less qualified for the office, except perhaps Ross Perot.

Ross Perot would have made an excellent President then and might even now although he is tad bit on the senior side.
